Be it known that I, GEORGE S. LOOKWOOI), a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Manufacture Consisting of a Combined Lantern or Lamp Post for Use on Small Water Craft. U

My invention consists of a locking device for holding in place, on a post, a lantern or lamp and may be used with any lantern hav-- ing a bail or arched movable handle, or with any lamp having a socket for support, such as the ordinary oil or acetylene bicycle lamp or other lamps having a similar device or socket for support; and the objects of my invention are to prevent the loss of a lamp or lantern, so supported on small water craft, by theft, capsizing or other possible cause and to provide a rigid and convenient support for such lamp or lantern. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a rear view of the lamp post locked in position; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view of base plate and socket e; Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the lantern post a; Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of the locking bar 9; similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

a is the post or lamp support provided at its upper end 1" with a slotted opening h adapted to receive the hooked end m of the locking bar g.

k is a cylindrical enlargement of the post a just below the slotted hole h of a suitable diameter to receivea round socket secured to the frame of a post lamp or lantern; the projecting lugs 11 at the lower end of cylinder 7c form a stop for the same. The horizontal top of the cylinder k with the vertical part of 1' of post a also form a shoulder for supporting the bail of a lantern.

- The foot of post a is provided with a shoe 0 adapted to slide into a socket in base plate 6. The shoe 0 is formed at a suitable angle to post a to allow same to incline enough from the vertical to allow the frame of a lantern to swing free from same when the bail of a lantern is supported and over the shoulder formed by the cylinder 7c. The base plate 6 is provided with a suitable socket for receiving the shoe 0 of post a, also-lateral flange I) provided with openings for bolts 0 for securing same to the deck 19 of a vessel.

(1 is a staple or U bolt passing through the base plate 6 also through the deck 19 and plate f on the under side of deck, to which the eye a of locking bar 9 is secured by means of an ordinary padlock 7'.

In operation the post a is slid into the socket of base plate 6, the bail of a lantern is hung over the shoulder formed by the cy1inder k; then the end m of the locking bar 9 is inserted into the slotted opening h of post a, then by turning the bar 9 down one quarter turn it will bring the eye a of same in line with the top of staple bolt d; the two may now be connected and locked together by means of a look as for instance an ordinary pad lock as shown in the drawings; while the locking bar 9 is secured to the staple d the lantern cannot be removed from the post a and post It cannot be removed from the base plate.

I claim:

1. A lockable lamp holder, comprising a fixed base plate, an upright post detachably connected to said base plate, a lamp support near the upper end of said post and a slotted opening above said support, a U bolt secured to said base plate; a connecting bar having a hooked end adapted to securely hook into said slotted opening and the other end terminating in an eye; a shackle connecting said eye and U bolt and any means for locking said shackle for the purpose set forth.

2. In a lockable lantern holder the combination with an upright post detachably connected to a rigid base, of a connecting bar removably connected to the top of said post and extending diagonally downward to the said base and terminating in an eye; a U bolt secured to the said base and a shackle for securing said U bolt to the eye of the connecting bar, and means for locking said shackle for the purpose of preventing the removal of said post from the base. I

3. In a lockable lantern holder the combination with an upright post detachably connected to a fixed base of a U bolt secured to said base; a lantern support near the upper end of said post, a connecting bar removably secured to said post above said lantern support and extending diagonally down and connecting with said U bolt by means of a padlock substantially as shown and for the pur- Witnesses:
