PILL BOX. No. 367,941. Patented Aug. 9, 1887. I
v &
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS C. WAITE, OFALLEGHENY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
PILL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,941, dates". August 9, 1887.
l 7 Application filed November 23, 1886. Serial No. 2l9,741 (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known. that I, THOMAS C. WAITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny City, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Pill-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pilhboxes inwhich a pivoted cover is fastened by a single wire nail upon a solid block of wood bored out to form the box, said lid being fastened or locked by a metallic button or dis; having a flat edge so arranged that when the flat edge is turned up the lid will slide over.
The objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a box of the right shape for Wrapping without further preparation; second, to provide a box by which two scparatekiuds of pills or specimens may be sent in the one box without danger of the contents getting mixed; .lhird, to provide a light, strong box which will stand the rough usage of transit by mail; fourth, to accomplish all these results in the one box at the lowest possible price. Iattain these objects by making a box as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the box with the lidopen to its fullest extent. Fig. 2 is a view of the box closed and locked ready for wrapping; Fig. 3, a top view of the solid block of wood as it appears with the lid entirely removed; Fig. 4, a top view of the box with the lid slid around so as to open only one compartment ofthe box. i
Similar letters refer to similar parts th rou ghout the several views.
( The box complete consists of an oblong or square (shown in the drawings as square) block of wood, I), bored by two angers at right angles to the grain, and deep enough to preserve sufficient wood at the lower end to make a bottom for the boxaugers to have no thread at the point, and so arranged that they will out a hole With a smooth bottom. The auger-holes are represented in the drawings by theletters (l d.
A lid, a, of thin wood of the same size as the box, is fastened by a single wire nail, e, in the middle of the lid at one side, as shown. This lid is to be locked by a metallic button out off at one side, said button to be fastened by a Wire nail in the center, so that it will turn. The button and nail are to be countersunk in the wood, so that their outer surface will be flush or even with the surface 01" the box, forming no obstruction and presenting no unevenness.
I am aware that prior to my invention boxes have been made of solid wood bored with 'or against the wood. I therefore do not claim this alone; but
\Vhat I do claim as my invention, and de sire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box comprising a cover, a, pivoted on a solid rectangular block of wood, b, having the two recesses d d, bored at right angles to the grain of the wood, the cover being locked by'a metallic button, 0, countersunk in the wood, all substantially as set forth, whereby either recess singly or both recesses together may be uncovered-at pleasure.
2. In a pill-box used for mailing purposes, a pivoted cover, a, a solid rectangular block of wood, I), the two auger-holes d d, and the metallic button 0, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified, whereby either recess singly or both recesses together may be uncovered at pleasure.
