P. H. CUTLER.
DESK ATTACHMENT. No. 367,789. Patented Aug. 9,,1887.
To all whom, it may cohcern:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED H. CUTLER, or BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
DESK ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,789,-dated August 9, 1887.
Applicationfiled March 16, 1887.
Be it known that I, FRED H. CUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Desk Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to office-desks, and is an attachment therefor designed as a receptacle for waste papers and other office refuse.
The object of my invention is twofold-first, to economize space in the office-room, and, second, to conceal from view unsightly office refuse.
I accomplish the objects ofmy invention in themanner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure 1 is a sectional view of an office desk provided with my improvement, and illustrates the preferred location of the receptacle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the receptacle or pocket itself, illustrating the configuration preferred by me; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of one form of bracket employed by me for securing the pocket in position.
Like letters of reference refer to correspond- 'ing parts in each figure of the drawings.
A and A represent the sides of the receptacle. These are of half-inchstuff ripped out in the shape'shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
B represents the back and bottom of the receptacle. This is one continuous sheet of some suitable flexible material, such as sheet metal, leather, press-board, or the like.
b is a tierod serving also as a supportingrod in the manner shown in Fig, 1;.and a and a represent that portion of the edge of the sides A and A designed to comein contact with the writing-bed of the desk, and serve thereby as a sort of a shoulder or stop to prevent the contracting or closing of the mouth of the receptacle by the weight or gravity of its body, for one will readily observe that a slight change in the configuration of the sides A and A at this point, or a. change in the location of the supporting-rod, will corespond ingly change the opening or mouth of the receptacle.
O S and S represent the bracket, or that portion of the device designed for the support of the receptacle proper, 0 being the Serial No. 231,195. (No model.)
base-piece, designed for attaching to the desk by means of screws or the like, and S and S being the hooks or supports, designed for the reception of the tie-rod b in the manner shown in Fig. .1, where it is secured to the under side ofthe writing-bed X of the desk Y.
It will be readily understood that Fig. 1 represents but one half of a desk, and that thereeeptacle or pocket is there shown as directly above and in front of the knees of the person sitting at the desk, yet sufficiently removed therefrom to prevent contact therewith. This position not only concealsthe device and its contents from View, but places it in a convenient position for the reception of any and all desk refuse. It is in easy reach of the occupant of the desk, and may be hung upon the bracket or removed therefrom by him without rising from his chair.
To hang the basket on the 'hooks S and S, tilt it, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and it should be tilted in like manner for removal therefrom.
This device occupies no floor-spaces, as do the ordinary waste-baskets. It is applicable to all desks or tables, and may be varied in size or style to correspond with the desk to which it is to be attached 'or to suit the caprice of its owner, and its location may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The herein shown and described desk attachment, consisting of a tilting waste re ceptacle provided with a supporting-rod, b, and having sides A and A, each provided with a shoulder, a, and united and held in position by means of bottom B and supporting-rod b, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein shown and described desk attachment, consisting of a receptacle having sides A A, bound together by means of a bottom, B, and supported by a bracket consisting of a bed-piece, 0, provided at its ends with supporting-hooks S S, all substantially as shown.
FRED H. CUTLER.
