Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
N. S HAMLIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURL IMPROVEMENT IN PHYSICIANS PRESCRIPTION-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,7!0, dated October 2l, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. S. HAMLIN, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and 11u proved Physicians Prescription Gase; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichv Figure 1 represents a planor top view of my case when the same is spread open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the case when folded up or closed. Y
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, with reference to the drawings.
The case A is made of a piece of enameled leather or other suitable tlexible material capable of being folded up in the manner hereinafter described. Said piece of leather or other material is cut out with three wings or tlaps, a
b c, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the draw' ings, and each wing is provided with a series ceive the receptacles ot' such drugs or medicines as are generally usedby physicians or surgeons, particularly in the army. The middle portion or body of the case Ais alsoprovided with two rows of pockets. g g, similar to the pockets d ef, and intended for thesame purpose.
The receptacles h are .either made of tine cotton cloth, secured by Spaldings glue or other suitable cement, and varnished with shellac, or they may be made of rubber cloth, or thin flat metallic eases might be used for holding liquids, if it should be desirable. Each pocket or receptacle may also be labeled, so
length that they meet in the middle of said i body, and that they can be secured together by hooks and eyes or other suitable fastening. The body of the case is now doubled up, and the middle wing, c', is wrapped around it, giving to the whole ease the appearance of a well-filled pocketbook, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The whole case may be held-together by an elastic band, t'. or in any other suitable manner. When folded up,the case can be conveniently carried in the pocket, and the drugs and other substances contained in the same are perfectly protected.
By the use of one of my cases a physician or surgeon is enabled to carry with him those drugs and medicines which he is most likely to be in need ot', and such a case is of particular advantage for army-surgeons, enabling them to afford timely relief in many cases where a short delay would prove fatal.
Two large pockets may be added under the small ones in the body of the case,for the purpose of carrying papers to be used in prescribing. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new article of manufacture, 1s-
The case A, consisting of three wings and a middle portion, each provided with pockets d, @,f, g, and g', arranged in the manner and Vfor the purpose set forth.
) N. S. HAMLlN.
