Patented June 1, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FOLDABLE CARRIER Ira. Leggett, Baxley, Ga.
Application October 23, 1952, Serial No. 316,342
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in carriers, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a carrier of the character herein described, which may be conveniently and eifectively employed by mailmen on rural delivery for accommodating in a neatly arranged fashion various types of cards, folders, envelopes, stamps, and other similar articles which rural mailmen ordinarily carry with them.
An important feature of the invention resides in the construction of the carrier which includes a plurality of individual pockets adapted to receive the various items above outlined, while another feature of the invention resides in its foldability to a compact, conveniently portable form.
some of th advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its expeditious and convenient operation, in its pleasing appearance and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention in its fully opened position.
Figur 2 is a vertical sectional View taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1. Y
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View taken substantially in the plane of the line 3-3 in Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the carrier in its folded position.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention is a carrier which is designated generally by the reference character if! and embodies in its construction a strip of flexible material i2 on which is superposed a relatively narrower strip M. The side and bottom edges of the strip M are stitched as at E6 to the corresponding sid and bottom edges of the strip 12, and vertical lines of stitching l8 are also extending through the two strips so as to define therebetween a plurality of pockets 20. These pockets are open at the top thereof and are adapted to receive suitable articles therein, as exemplified by the indicia 22 which may be printed on the strip l2 above the respective pockets.
The strip 52 includes what may be called an intermediate portion I2a and a pair of end portions lZb, each of these portions accommodating generally two of the pockets and each portion being provided at its upper edge with a handle 2 A flexible panel 26 is stitched at 28 to the lower edge of the intermediate portion i211, and an additional pocket 36 is provided on the panel 2t, as will be clearly apparent.
The entire carrier may b conveniently folded by first folding the panel 26 upon the intermediate portion I 2a and then folding the two end portions l2?) in superposed relation on the panel 26, as shown in Figure 4.
In that position the three handles 24 will be juxtaposed and substantially in register, so that by grasping all the handles at the same time, th carrier may be conveniently handled and at the same time retained in its closed position.
From the foregoing, th construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifica-= tions and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A foldable carrier comprising an elongated strip of material having top, bottom and end edges, respectively, and embodying an intermediate and end portions, a relatively narrower strip of material coextensive in length with the first strip having a bottom and end edges, stitched to the bottom and end edges of the first strip and further stitched to said first strip transversely to provide a pair of side by side pockets on the intermediate and each end portion of the first strip spaced downwardly on said first strip, said. end portions being foldable on said intermediate portion to fold the pockets thereon in pairs into overlapping relation over the pairs of pockets of the intermediat portion, and a panel stitched to the bottom edge of the first strip between said end portions for folding over said intermediate portion and embodying a single pocket of the same width as the combined widths of the pair of pockets on said intermediate portion.
