Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
THOMAS GARRICK, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNAPSACKS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,343, dated September 24, 1861.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS GARRICK, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhodelsland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knapsacks for Soldiers Use, which I style a Combined Knapsack, Canteen, and Haversackf and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure lis a side View of the knapsack, ac., as it appears when strapped upon the back of the soldier. Fig. 2 isa View of the same asit appears when the back of the soldier is turned toward the observer. Fig. 3 is a View of the haversack and canteen when detached from the knapsack and worn at the side. Figs. 5 and 6 are views of the canteen and suction-tube. Fig. 7 is a View of the knapsack when opened. Fig. Sis a View of the same when folded up, and Figs. 4 and 9 are details, to be referred to hereinafter.
The object of myinvention is to provide an article for the convenience of Athe soldier which shall be so arranged that it can accommodate in one package to be carried on the back his clothing and rations, while the different parts which compose it can be used separately, if desired, and also to construct the 4knapsack in such a manner that it can be, when not in use, folded into a small space for convenience of storage or transportation.
A, Figs. 1 and 7, represents a knapsack the outward form of which is similar to those now in use, but Whose construction will presently be described. B is aWater-proof flap attached to it, within which, as shown in Fig. 7, the blanket can be placed. Two ears p p, of leather, Figs. l and 7, are attached to the knapsack, extending below the bottom,wl1ich furnish a means for buttoning the canteen E to the knapsack, as shown. The canteen is Vcan be drawn into the mouth,
in the form of a senii-cylindcr, Figs. 5 and G, its length being equal to the width of the knapsack. It is provided with a flexible tube d, through which the contents of the canteen The canteen is also provided with a supportingstrap l2, which enables the wearer to slingit at his side whenever the knapsack is not worn.
The haversack C is arranged, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that it can be vsecured to the knapsack, the upper straps passing over the shoulders and buckled to the straps which cross the breast and sustain the knapsack, Figs. l and 9. When the knapsack is not worn, the haversack can, by the use of the same straps, be slung at the side, as shown in Fig. 3.
The knapsack, Fig. 7, has its four sides A A F F made of light wood or other suitable material, and is covered with a casing of enameled cloth or other flexible material. The two opposite sides A and F are hinged at opposite extremities to the other sides, respectively, a spring-catch at the ends not hinged securing them in position. When the knapsack is not required for use, the sidesA and F can be readily folded against the othertwo sides and the whole folded together', making a package like that shown at Fig. 8.
.What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
l. Combining and arranging a knapsack, canteen, and haversack in the manner substantially as described.
2. Making the sides of a knapsack in such manner that they can be folded together, sub stantially as described, forthe purposes speciiied.
THOMAS GARRICK.
