UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM J. REED, OF KINGSVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION .forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,679, dated May 24, 1887.
Application tiled January 25,*1867. Serial Nu-25,444. (Noniodel.)
To all whom b may] concern: Be it' known that I, WILLIAM J. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingsville, in the countyof Richland and State of South Carolina, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Travelers Lanterns; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same. This invention relates to travelers lanterns, audits object is to provide a simple and improved lantern of this classin which the parts can be readily detached to facilitate packing, and which can be conveniently adjusted on the back of an ordinary railroad-car seat in such a manner as to furnish light to one or two persons for reading.
In the drawings, Figure l is aperspective View ofthe lantern embodying my improve ments, the ear seatA being shown in dot-ted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line :1005,Fig.A 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a rear side elevation. Fig. 6 isa detail perspective view of the lamp or eaudle-holder. Fig. 7 is a plan view of thelampholder.
Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the cylindrical body of the lantern, having a draftopening, a. at its top, over which is provided a cap, B. Upon the rear side of the body A, at its top,is provided a transverseloop or bracket, C, and near the lower end is provided a corresponding bracket, D, having two notches, d d, in its lower edge.
E E designate two supporting-hooks, which are preferably formed of wire and comprise a straight main section, e, passing through the brackets C D, and having a hook; shaped lower end, c', engaging the notch d. At the top of the main section c the supporting-hooksare bent rearwardly at about right angles to the main portion,.as shown at c, and are then provided with hook-shaped top ends, c, adapted to fit over the top edge of the back of the carseat, as shownin Fig. l., to retain thelautern in position for reading. It will be observed that these hooks are readily detachable from the brackets when it is desired to pack the lantern for transportation.
At the open bottom of the bodyA is provided an inwardly-proiecting circular flange,
pins or studs t', projecting laterally, as shown.
The candle-holderiscylindrieal,andis adapted to be inserted in the open bottom of the body A, the studs i heilig received by the notcliesg when the holder H is turned to engage its studs with the slots f, and thereby lock it in position.
From the center of the holder l-I projects a vertical cylindrical tube, .,T, having a spiral spring, K, located at its bottom and adapted to automatically feed a candle (designated by the letter L) located in the tube. A cap, M, is provided. for the tube J, and has a central opening, m, in its top, through which the wick of the candle projects. This cap may be retained in position by means of a projection, a, upon the side ofthe tube, registering with an indentation, o,- in the cap, the latter being sprung over the said projection' in its adjustment upon the tube; but any other adapted means may be provided for holding the cap in position. It will beunderstood-that the office of the cap is to hold the candle down against the tension ol' the coiled spring, so that as the candle burns away it is fed automatically vertically by the spring. In lieu of this candleholder any suitable lamp device may be provided in the holder I-I. Y
I? designates a cylindrical slide, adapted to slide around the body A, and retained against vertical displacement by means of top and bottom ribs, q r, respectively, projecting from the body ofthe lantern. This slide is provided with two projecting oircular flanges, S S', respectively, extending around two circular openings, T T', adapted to register with corresponding openings, U U', in the body A. These lianges carry b ullseyes V V', and the slide is adapted 'to be readily adjusted when the lantern is in position to enable persons at either side to read, or so that the openings at only one side register and enable a person at that side to read without disturbing a person sitting at the opposite side of the lantern.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a travclers lantern, the combination, with the body having projecting brackets or loops upon its rear side, of-detachable sup-` porting-wires engaging said loops, and having hook-shaped ends, substantially as set forth.
2. In a travelers lantern, the combination, with the body having a top bracket and a bottom bracket provided with notches, ,of detachable supporting-wires engaging the braelr4 ets, and having hook-shaped top and bottoni ends, substantially as set forth.
3. In a travelers lantern, the combination, with the cylindrical body of the lantern having an open bottom provided with an inwardly` projecting circular flange, G,v formed with diagonally-opposite notches g, and with a cylindrical vertical iange, F, projecting from the inner edge ofthe tlange G, and formed with the notches g, of a cylindrical lamp-holder adapted to lit within the dan ges and provided with laterallyprojecting studs entering the notches g andY resting upon the lower Harige, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. Ina travelers lantern, the combination, with a detachable candle-holder comprising a closed bottom having a circular series of airperforations and cylindrical sides, projecting vertically from the bottom and adapted to retain the holder in position, of a vertical tube projecting centrally from the bottom and adapted to receive and carrya candle, substantially as set forth.
5. In a travelers lantern, the combination, with the cylindrical body of the lantern having two perforations, of a corresponding eX- terior slide having two perforations or openings and carrying two bulls-eyes, the slide being capable of adjustment to bring into use either one or both ofthe bull's-eyes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a travelers lantern, the combination, with the body having two light-openings and the top and bottom projecting ribs, of a cylindrical slide retained between these ribs and provided with two corresponding openings and with two cylindrical l'langes projecting therefrom and carrying bulls-eyes, the slide being adjustable upon the body, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afli'x my signature in prese-nce of two witnesses.
