Description

G. H. GHINNOOK.
Lamp.
No. 202,234. Patented Apri|l9,1878.
I'm J /fl/ 1 I Wham. mam v fia a/mc W Wm,
UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. OHINNOGK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO LEONARD RICHARDSON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,234, dated April 9, 1878; application filed January 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. OnINNooK, of the city of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of the combination, in one piece, of a chimney and a translucent or transparent holder or base adapted to support a shade, whereby economy of parts is obtained.
My invention also consists of the combination, in one piece, of a chimney, a deflector, and a translucent or transparent holder or base for a shade, whereby these parts are simplified and cheapened.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a side view of a lamp embodying my improvements, the chimney, deflector, translucent or transparent holder or base, and shade being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a similar view of a lamp, showing the translucent or trans parent holder or base in the reverse position, and it and the shade supported by it in section.
Similar letters of reference designate correspondin g parts in both figures.
In carrying out my invention various kinds of lamps may be employed. The one I have shown consists of a reservoir, A, mounted on a pedestal, B, and provided with a cap, 0, burner-tube D, and a wick-adjusting mechanism, E.
Referring first to Fig. 1,13 design ates a chim ney, and G a translucent or transparent holder or base, made in the same piece therewith; and H designates a deflector formed at the junction of the said chimney and holder orbase. The means shown for supporting these parts consist of a series of spring-arms, I, extending from the cap 0 and fitting within the deflector H.
It will be seen that the deflector thus has the additional function of a shoulder or recess for fitting over the spring-arms I, so as to preclude lateral movement of the chimney and holder or base.
1t will be seen that the holder or base is pro- I vided with. a rim, a, and a flange, 12, around and upon which the rim of the shade J may fit, and so be held steadily in place.
Turning, now, to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the chimney F and holder or base G are reversed, and that the chimney fits within the spring-arms I, and the holder or base receives the rim of the shade J upon opposite sides of the flange b, and within an inwardly-extending flange, c, which precludes it from displace ment.
When a soft, mellow light is desired, the chimney and holder or base are arranged as illustrated in Fig. 1; but when a bright light is desired, they are preferably arranged as illustrated in Fig. 2.
By arranging these parts in all cases so that the lower portions of the chimney are at about on a level with the top of the burner-tube, I am enabled to dispense with an air-distributer. I may, however, employ an air-distributer in some cases. I may also see fit to make the chimney F of different colors in some cases.
It will be seen by my invention that I provide for dispensing with an air-distributor that I simplify the appurtenances of a lamp by forming the deflector, chimney, and a holder or base for a shade inone piece, and that I provide for arranging said parts in different positions, so as to afford difierent qualities of light.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a chimney anda translucent or transparent holder or base for a shade formed in one piece, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a chimney, a deflector, and a translucent or transparent holder or base for a shade formed in one piece, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
GEO. H. OHINNOGK.
