Specification of Letters Patent.

ing drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to lanterns, and more particularly to a lantern especially adapted for burning gasolene, or like fuel, wherein burner and generator members are supported by a fuel supply tube and spaced from the storage vessel; the principal object of the invention being to provide a structure of this character wherein the globe and upper frame parts are supported directly from the base of the lantern when the latter is either resting on its base or swung from the handle, and thereby relieve the burner tube'of the weight of the superimposed parts. 7
In accomplishing these objects I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a lantern constructed according to my invention. Fig. 11 is a plan view of the globe base; the globe being removed and the supporting standards and burner tubes being in section; the view illustrating one of the damper platespartially open. Fig. III is an inverted plan view of the globe base, the supporting standards and burner tubes being in section. Fig. IV is a detail elevation of one of the supporting standards, partly in section, and illustrating the mounting of the globe base and handle. Fig. V is a detail View, showing manner of clamping the top member on the supporting standards.
Referring more in detail to the parts, 1 designates the base of the lantern, which forms a tank for containing the liquid fuel, and 2 are standards which rise from opposite positions on the tank to support the globe about the burner parts.
Each of the standards 2 comprises a rod 3 which is threaded into a nut 4: that is preferably welded, or otherwise permanently secured, to the top of the tank 1, and sleeves 5-6, which inclose the rod and sup port the base and top 78 of the globe casing.
The globe base 7 preferably comprises ears 9 which project beyond the edge there 7 of, and are provided with apertures 10 of such diameter that they may slide freely over the rods 3 and seat on the lower sleeve 5, and the top 8 is of greater diameter than the base and provided with apertures 11 which also slide on the rod 3 and are seated on the tops of the outwardly projecting ears 12.
The outwardly projecting ears 12, rest on the upper ends of sleeves 6, and are pro vided with apertures 13 therein for receiving the rods 3, and with upturned outer ends containing transverse apertures 14 for pivotally mounting the inturned ends 15 of a handle 16 from which the lantern may be swung.
The tips of the inturned ends 15 of the handle are provided with nuts 17 for locking the handle to the standards, but which do not interfere with the free pivotal movement of the inturned ends in their mount ings.
The base 7 and top 8 have facing edge flanges 18 for confining a globe l9, and the base 7 is out out at the center to form a recess 20 through which the supply tube and regulator valve may be projected.
Mounted on the tank 1 and projecting into the globe casing, through the recess in the base 7, is a supply tube 21, having a valve 22 below the base, and provided, within the globe, with a generator 23. The generator may be of any suitable construction, and is controlled by a regulator of any ordinary type, having a stem 24 projecting downwardly through the hollowv center of the base, and provided with a handle member 25, so that both the flow of liquid fuel and the vapor may be controlled from beneath the globe. The top of the globe comprises a dome 26, having suitable air intake ports 27 and a cap 28, which may be adapted for providing a clown-draft. The generator also comprises an air supply tube 29, which extends downwardly through an aperture 30 in the base 7.
Threaded into the upper end of the tube 21 is an upwardly extended rod 31 which projects through an aperture 32 in the center of the cap 26 and carries a tightening nut 33, by which the top 8 is clamped firmly.
. fixed on and rising above the base tank, up-' pier and 'lowersleeves mounted on said rods,
against ears 12, so that the upper sleevesx6 are pressed downwardly onto the top of base ears 9 to hold the sleeve and easing mem bers firmly in place.
Pivotally mounted on the base 7 are damper-plates 32, which are adapted for clostravel thereover by pin and slot connection -36 with the base. 7 V
It is apparent that with a lantern otthis construction, the globe parts are supported entirely from the tank base when the lantern is not in use, and that when in use, the entire structure is supported from the .base
through the connection of the handle with 25' f placed on the fuel supply tube is that of the burner and generator. not only forms a very substantial and comthe side standards 2, so that the only weight This arrangement pact structure, but also obviates derangement of the burner and generator by the strain which would be placed thereon if the tank and other parts-were supported from i Supply t b 1- burner, as would be the its cap.
case if the globe were mounted on the tube and the handle connected with the globe or The construction also adapts the device for proper regulation and draft, and the arrangement of the parts, as described, provides a lantern having a neat and attractive appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A lantern comprising a base, standards rising from the. base, a burner closure comprising a globe and spaced base and top members mounted "on the standards and adapted to support the'globe, a supply tube mg or regulating the hollow center of the j 2. Alantern comprising base tank, rods a globe base having apertured portions slidably mounted on the rods and supported on said lower sleeves, ears mounted on the-up 1 per sleeves, a globe top slidable on the rods and supported on said ears, a handle pivotally mounted on said ears, a globemounted 7 between the globe top and 'ba se'members, a
supply tube mounted on the tank, and a burner mounted onthe supply tube'within the globe.
3'. A lantern COmPl1SlIlg, tib2LS$, standards risingi'rom the base, a burner-closure comprising spaced base and topfmembers moimted; on the standards, and a globe supported between said base and top members,
a supplytube rising; fromthe base, burner 7 members mounted on said supply tube within the globe, a rod on said'supply tubeeX tending through the top of the globe, and a put on said rod for clamping the globe in position. i A 4'; A lantern'comprising a base tank, standards risin from said tank,,aihandle on said standards, a burner closure supported on said'standardsand comprising top and base members an'da globe supportedbetween said basemembers, a fuel supply pipe rising from said tank and projecting "into saidburner closure, a burner on said pipe and a damper onsaid base member surrounding said fuel supply pipe. 5. A lantern comprising i a base tank, standards rising from said tank, ahandle on said standards, a burner closure mounted on said standards and comprising topfandba'se members, a fuel supply pipe rising from the tank and projecting into said closure, 7 a burner on said pipe, a regulating valve on said burner projecting from the lower part of said closure, an air supply pipe forsaid burner opening through .said base member, and an adjustable damper on said basemember adapted to 'closearou'nd said fuel supply pipe and regulating valve;
in presence of 'two witnesses. 7
