UNITED STATES PATENT; OFFICE.
HENRY E. SHAFFER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
WICK-RAISER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,488, dated May 10, 1892.
Application filed April 1, 1891.
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. SHAFFER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in VVick-Raisers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, ref erence being bad to the drawings accompanying this specification.
My improvement relates to wick-raisers for center-draft lamps, and is of that kind where a lever or handle extends down into the lamp and has a bent end which turns up and enters a socket on one side of the band that encircles the wick. The objection to devices of this kind in common use is the difficulty of connecting and fastening the parts inside the lamp.
The object of my invention is to provide means by which the parts can be raised and connected above the top of the lamp and by which they are self-engaging when the stem is inserted in the socket.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section of a lamp, showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the wick-raising band and the lower bent end of the operating lever or handle separated. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same parts connected.
A indicates an ordinary center-draft lamp.
B is the center tube, and C the outer tube, attached to the burner-cap D and removable with it.
E is the circular wick, resting outside the tube B and between it and the outer tube G.
My improvement is as follows:
G is a slotted band or thimble resting around the wick and constituting the raiser.
II is a lever or handle passing loosely through the top of the lamp and connected with the band, by which means the latter is operated. When the burner-cap D is removed, the band G can be raised through the opening at the top of the lamp, and the bend at the bottom of the lever is long enough for this to be done.
a, Fig. 2, is a tubular socket on one side of the wick-raising band G, and b is an up- Serial No. 387,269. (No model.)
wardly-turned stem of the lever II, which enters the same. Near the upper end of the socket is a slot 0, which cuts out the greater portion of the diameter of the socket, leaving only a connecting portion (Z in front. In this slot rests a cross-spring f, curved so as to rest at the back of the socket and extending out and attached at the rear to the outside of the band. The upper end g of the lever-stem is pointed, and under this pointed end is a square notch h, which receives the spring f.
To insert the wick in place on the center tube or to adjust the band higher or lower, the burner-cap D is removed and the lever H is raised till the pointed end of the stem comes above the lamp. The band is also brought above the lamp. Then by aligning the parts the stem is drawn up into the socket. The pointed end of the stem passing behind the spring presses it out automatically, and when the head has passed above the spring the latter springs back into the notch 71, thus securing the parts together.
I am aware that a spring has before been used attached at one end to the wick-band and engaging with a shoulder of the stern of the handle; but in such case, as the opposite end is unsupported, it lacks strength and is liable to be bent or broken under the strain in moving it up and down; but by securing the other end inithe slot 0 of the socket this difficulty is obviated and the device is made much more substantial.
Having described my invention, I do not claim, broadly, a spring for locking the stem of the handle.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the socket a, provided with the slot 0 and neck d, of the handle-stem I), provided with the notch hand the spring f, attached to the wick-band and resting in the slot of the socket and supported thereby, as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY E. SHAFFER.
