Description

E. BLACKMAN.
, SHADE-HOLDER. No.183,6 27. Patented Oct.24.-,1876.

N4 FEIERS, PHfiTO-LITHUGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D G.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EBENEZER BLAGKMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHADE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,627, dated October 24, 1876; application filed January 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EBENEZER BLAGKMAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shade-Holders, and that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in construeting and attaching a shade-holder in such a manner that the lamp can be removed for the purpose of trimming or filling without removing either shade or holder.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the shadeholder. Fig. 2 is a view of the shade-holder attached to the base with lamp and shade ready to be screwed onto the fixture.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my shade-holder of wire or other suitable metal. The wires for the support of the shade, being three or more in number, are fastened into a base-piece, A, as shown in Fig. 2. The wires for the support of the shade are made of various shapes, so as to conform to the shape of the different lamps and shades used, and allow the lamps to be taken out without removing the shade-holder or shade. The upper end of the wire is bent to receive the edge of the shade, as shown at B, Fig. 1. The base is made of metal, taped and threaded at its lower end, so that it can be screwed onto the ordinary gas or lamp fixture. The upper end 0, Fig. 1, is provided with a locking device or the ordinary globe or lamp-fastener.
Operation: Screw the base with the Wiresupports and shade on the ordinary gas or lamp fixture; then pass the lamp between the supports up under the shade, and lock or fasten it. It is then ready for use.
The advantage of this shade-holder over those now in use is, that you can remove your lamp for trimming, filling, or putting in new wick when it is used on the ordinary gas or lamp pendants or-brackets, without disturbing your shade or holder. The presentmode of supporting shades and holders is to rest them on the top of the lamp instead of under it, which make it necessary to remove the shade and holder in trimming or putting new wick in the lamp.
Having thus fully described my improved shade-holder, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure Letters Patent, is-
1. A shade-holder, constructed with metal supports bent or formed at one end to receive a shade, and fastened into a base-piece at the other end, said base-piece being constructed so as to attach to the ordinary gas or lamp fixture, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the base A with the Wire-supports and shade and lamp, when arranged and operated as described.
EBENEZER BLAGKMAN.
