ELECTRIC-LAMP REFLECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,403, dated March 31,1891.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK CooLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric-Lamp Reflectors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of electric-lamp reflectors more especially adapted for use with incandescent lamps; and it consists in the several parts and combination of parts hereinafter specified and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a lamp and reflector. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are details of the cap-fastening.

A is an incandescent lamp, mounted upon a threaded supporting-rod B.

C is a reflector, preferably made of spun metal, and treated upon its reflecting-surface c with white or other paint. The upper surface c serves as a roof. The reflector has a hollow cylindrical hub c2, which is provided with L-shaped recesses c3 c3. A cap D is mounted on this hub and furnished with lugs cl d, adapted to take into the L-shaped recesses c3 c3 and lock the cap to the hub. The lugs may be upon the hub and the recesses in the cap, if desired. The lugs are locked into the recesses by means of the slot-spring E taking over one of them, as shown in Fig. 3.

The threaded rod B takes through the cap D and is clamped to it by means of set-nuts b b and elastic washers b b', so as to prevent a movement of the lamp relative to the reflector and make a water-tight connection. The cap is provided with a flange d, which takes over the hub c2 to also make a watertight connection.

I'I is a sheath for the electric wires, curved to prevent the admission of Water underneath the cap.

It often becomes necessary to repair the lamp and its connections, which cannot conveniently or satisfactorily be done without removing the whole reflector. My invention provides a simple means for accomplishing this. Simply press the spring and turn the cap until the lugs are released by the L- shaped recesses, and the reflector may then be removed. In handling shades of porcelain the breakage from dropping them von pavements and sidewalks has been very great. This difficulty is also obviated by my painted metallic shade, as well as preventing any damage that may be done by the admission of water to the lamp and its connections.

I claim- 1. The combination of an electric lamp, a supportingrod therefor, a cap adjustable along said rod and adapted to be locked thereto by set-screws and elastic washers, whereby a water-tight connection is made therewithto prevent the admission of water underneath said cap, and a reflector supported thereby, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of an electric lamp, a supporting-rod therefor, a cap adjustable along said rod and adapted to be locked thereto by set-screws and elastic washers, whereby a water-tight connection is made therewith to prevent the admission of water underneath said cap, and a detachable reilector supported thereby, the reflecting-surface thereof being paint, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination of an electric lamp, a supporting-rod therefor, a flanged cap adjustable along said rod and having a water-tight connection therewith, a detachable reflector supported by the cap, and a curved sheath for the electric wires, the parts being so arranged as to prevent the admission of water underneath the reflector to the lamp, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

The combination of an electric lamp, a supporting-rod therefor, a hub carrying a refleeting-surface, and a cap adjustable along said rod and adapted to be locked thereto by means of set-nuts b b and washers b h and to be locked to the hub by the lugs CZ cl taking into the recesses c3 c3, the parts being so arranged as to prevent the admission of water underneath the cap to the lamp, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
