MILLER 65 COMPANY, OF NECTICUT.
OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR' TO EDWARD MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, -A CQRPORATION OF GON- LIGHTING-FIXTURE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FERDINAND P. SCHOENHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Meriden, New Haven county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting-Fixtures-of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to the type of suspended lighting fixtures wherein translucent surfaces are utilized to reflect light against a wall or ceiling and at the same time itself transmit a difi'used glow, the translucent substancebeing embodied in a bowl or tray shaped structure within and above which the lamp, bulb or other source of light is located. Heretofore devices of this character have been constructed in the main of a single piece of translucent fragile material requiring expensive molding operations, and consequently being expensive to replace in case of breakage.
The device of the presentinvention aims to provide a suspended fixture of this general character wherein the translucent substance may The arranged and furnished in sections carried by a suitable frame so that event of the breakage of one section, the whole structure does not have to be removed.
The present device also provides a structure which is simple ineits fundamental characteristics and which may be utilized as a basis for a wide variation of design within the boundaries of the general type employed.
Que specific embodiment which my invention may take is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and is described in the following detailed specification taken in connection with said drawings.
In these drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a suspended lighting fixture constructed in accordance with the present invention, part only of the suspending chains being shown. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the fixture shown in Fig. 1, and on an enlarged scale, parts being broken away. Fig. 3'is a fragmentary perspective view of part of the frame, the
glass panels being removed. Fig. 4 is a.

fixture. Fig. 5 illustrates an ornamental detail. The lighting fixture shown in these drawlngs is in the form of a tray-like receptacle, containing a series of panels at the sides for translucent material, and havinga translucent bot-tom. To this end I provide a frame, preferably of metal, and formed of a horizontal angle ring piece'l having a horizontal ledge or supporting flange 1 and forming the base of the frame; a horizontal upper ring 2 and a plurality of vertical strips or bands 3 which may be suitably connected to the horizontal rings as by rivets 3 and which divide the sides of the panels. The horizontal ledge or shelf 1? of the bottom ring member is designed to support a translucent surface or surfaces 15 made, for instance, of art glass. Th1s bottom may be of a single piece or may be formed of a series of sections seated in a frame of suitable configuration, which frame will rest on the ledge 1. Between the vertical strips 3 forming the panels, a series of curved sections 5 of translucent material, as for instance the art glass before referred to, are inserted, the
lower edges of these sections resting on the upper face of the bottom 15 of the fixture, and their adjacent edges being spaced apart by suitablemeans, as for instance, by the rivets 3 In order to retain these inserted are provided with tongues 4- arranged to be bent over the edges of adjacent panels tolock the same against the inner faces of the frame rings 1 and 2 and against the vertical strips. As panels rest upon the upper face of the bottom and as these panels are themselves held to the frame by the tongues 4, it will be evident that the bottom itself is likewise held in position. These tongues may be formed in .any suitable manner, as for instance by a separate piece of flexible metal attached to the inner face of the transverse strips and cut to provide tongues H, as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and act the drawmgs. v i
The frame with its translucent panels is from, and to lie room which it is One form of sustray is as follows:
adjacent, the ceiling of the desired to illuminate. pension means for the ets 10 may ture attached thereto,
At a series of spaced intervals about the edge of the tray, I dispense with the usual rivets 3? and provide hooked members 6 located on the inner edge of the tray and having threaded shanks 7' which extend through alined bores formed in the ring 2 and strips 3, and -are'lield to the frame by means of ornamental nuts 8 screwing upon the threaded ends of the shanks 7 which project beyond the outer face of the ring 2. The edges of adjacent panels 5 are pref erably cut away, as at 5, to pcrmitthe insertion of the shank 7 of the suspending hooks and also to permit these hooks to be used as a means of clamping brackets 10 to the interior of the frame. These brackbe of any suitable design, one form being shown in the drawings wherein the bracket is provided with a bore through which the shank of the hook extends, and with a threaded stud 11 at its opposite end to which a fixture carrying an electric bulb may be secured. The frame is, of course, suspended by means of chains 9 whose end links may engage with the hooks 6 carried by the frame.
The panel 15 forming the bottom of the tray may have an exterior ornamental fixsuch, for instance, as an ornamental knob 12 having a reduced threaded stem 12 inserted through an opening formed, say, centrally of the bottom panel 15 and engaged by a nut 13 at the inner side of the tray. A suitable rosette 14: may be carried and supported by the knob 12 and rests against the under external face of the panel. This particular attachment, however, forms no part of the present invention and is merely referred toto show one commercial embodiment of the completed article.
It will, of course, be understood that the configuration of the frame work and, therefore, of the tray, may vary widely and that the tray by no means is limited to a circular construction; also that the frame and the panels may be widely varied in design and ornamentation, this last applying also to the minor detail features of ornamental construction. Nor do I wish to be limited to the specific means shown for supporting the tray to the'ceiling and for the attachment of the lighting element thereto, as this may var widely to suit different conditions and designs, I
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A reflecting lighting fixture of the character described comprising a frame work having an open top and a bottom opening therein and having a plurality of openings a covering for said bottom opensaid frame for suptranslucent material in its sides, mg, means carried by portingsaid covering,
