RICHARD WILLIAMSON, or CHICAGO, ILLINoIs `A*lsksIGivoIgJair MSNE ASSIGNMENIS, To BEARDSLEE CHANDELIER MANUFACTURING Co, orfcIIIcAGo, ILLINOIS, Acon- POR'ATION OF DELAWARE Application led J une 14,
tive fixture of simple construction adapted` to receive a lampand to soften and distribute `5 the light therefrom in a highly efficient Inanner to produce a superior illuminating effect.
The invention is capableof embodiment iny shades Which vary in detail construction and shape and in the laccompanying drawings I have shown the invention in several selected embodiments as follows:
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation showing a fiared shade having an open top andan opening in its bottom.
Fig. 2 is similar to Fig. 1 showing a shade provided with a crowned top. Y
Fig. 3 is similar to Fig. 2 showing the shade open at the top and provided With a flat bottom closure. Y-
Fig. 4 is similar to Fig. 3 except that the bottom is concavo convex.
Fig. 5 is similar to Fig. 3 with the lshade provided With a crowned top closure.
bottom is concavo convex.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view showing a cylindrical shade having a flat top closure and a Fig. 8 is a sectional view showing a cylindrical shade open at the top and bottom.'
The'invention will be usually embodied in y a fixture comprising a plurality of arms adapted to be suspended fromthe ceiling of a dining room and above a table, ror from the .5 ceiling of a living room, butI do not restrict the invention to this or any other particular typeof fixture'because it Willl be readilyl appreciated, as the invention is better understood, that it is capable of embodiment in other fixtures with satisfactoryV results. Therefore, I consider it suiiicient to'shoW and describe the arm 9 of the fixture in a general Way only as provided With a bracket 10 for supporting the lamp socket 11 to Which it'is securely fastened. lThis socket may project horizontally above the arm vand sufficiently close to the arm so that the Vlamp 12 `Will. project through a side opening in the shadeV and close to an opening 13 in the arm, Fig. 1.
50v The shade is `generally cylindrical in shape,
Fig. 6 is similar to Fig. 5except that the;
Cline the lamp as shown in LIGHTING L its side. Walfl4 'extending from top to bottom allaround the shade, and thislside Wall may he'flared as'shovvn inthe shades of Figs. 1 to 6, or it may be straight as shown .in theV shades of Figs. 7, 8. 'The lflaredV shade 14 of Fig. 1 has anr open top 14 an open bottom 14; and 'thebottom preferably has'an in-` yla/-rdly directed rimfflalbout the Aopening open bottom 14 and a rim 15 like Fig. 1 and itv alsojhas 4a 'crowned top 16. lThe shade 17 of Fig.- 3Ihas an open top like the`shade 14 of l F 1but it has aflat-cl'osed'bottoin17. The shade 1:8 ofFig. 4 is similar tothe shade 17 of Fig. 3 except that Vits closed bottom 18" is 1s concavo-convex and fits in the" opening 13 of the arm. The shade 19 of F ig.' vv5 isl'sirnilarto the shade `1`7`of Figg except that it has vva. croivnedl'top 129. "The shade 20 of Fig. 6 is similar tothe shade 19 of Fig. 5 except that it has va concave-convex bottom 20".. The shade '21 of Fig. 7. `has a-"st-raight side Wall, a closed top 21"'and a concavo-convexlbottom 21`.- The shade-22-of Fig. kSis 'also straight sided and it has an open top22 and an open 1 -Eveiy fori'n oft-he l'shade is fprovided with an enclosed opening `24'in its sidewall located adjacent the bottom ofthe shade toreceive the lamp. The side-Iwall'extends from the top of this opening to the top vof the shade inthe flared or straight cylindrical forms illustrated. f f v v The opening 13 maybe located close to the rim 23 of the arm, Fig. 1, or it maybe spaced fromxthe rim, Fig. 2. In either construction, the shade may beremoved easily for cleaningor for other purposes, and replaced Without necessitating removal of the amp. i
It is 'desirable that the socket should not beexposed to View from be-lovvfthe fix,
The'fiar'ed shade lfiofr Fig. 2 has Van ture.k In some fixtures it'may be hidden by the arm, which is usually of ornamental design, but in some cases it may be desirable. to llovver the socket close to the arm and in-` Fig. 3 for better concealing `the socket.
The construction and. arrangement of the arm, the shade and the lamp provide for the "ice . accommodate a plurality yof lamps` distribution of the light from the lamp in a superior manner giving a soft and evenly' distributed )illumination which is highly effective especially with a ceiling fixture. The shade will throw a flood-like effect upward which is softened by the provision of a top. The shade will soften and distribute Vthe light laterally and, if the wall of the shade is flared, the light will be distributed laterally and downwardly. It the shade 'is provided with a concavo-conveX bottom, as I prefer,
the light will be thrown downward in a inanner highly desirable and satisfactory for illuininating a table, for reading and for other purposes. In all constructions, the light from the lamp `will be softened and dis tributed in a manner which will avoid :shadows and will produce the most elicient lighting efect. Y f
I have shown the inventionfin a simple form with the shade made to receive a single lamp, but the shade may be enlarged to ref ceive a plurality of lamps and the opening 13 may be enlarged or may be duplicated` to r he shade may -be made of translucent glass `with or without decorations, or it may be made of any other material, and any desiredk shape within the scope of the following claini:
I claim: In a lightingpfixture, the combination of a horizontally disposed supporting arin provided with a bottom opening and having a seat portion surrounding said opening, a glass shade having a bottom wall removably supported on said seat portion and an upstanding wall surrounding said bottom wall, said upstanding wall having an enclosed side opening adjacent the bottom wall, a socket mounted on said arm outside of said shade and a lamp mounted in said socket and eX- tending substantially horizontally into said shade through said side opening and adj acentsaid bottoni wall.
