UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK STORK, OF KEVVASKUM, \VISCONSIN.
SCREEN.
SPEGIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,333, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed January 28, 185W. Serial No. 225,781. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SToRK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewaskum, in the county of Washington, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wall protectors or screens to be used back of stoves or other heating devices; and my object is to provide a device of the above'character of metal, and so form the same as to be adapted for use in connection with either a heating or cookingstove-namely, a tall narrow stove or a flat wide stove.
With these general objects in view, the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear perspective of a screen constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a rear ele vation thereof, the same being shown as adapted for use in connection with a cooking-stove. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the same being shown as adapted for use in connection with a heating-stove; and Fig. 4 is a detail in section taken on the line or a: of Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention, I prefer to construct my device wholly of metal, although I do not limit the same in this respect, as certain novel features herein shown and described may be applied to screens of different construction and adapted for different uses.
In this instance I construct my screen proper, A, of zinc or other desirable sheet metal, and may or may not ornament the same with any fanciful design; and in order to give the screen a finished appearance and to strengthen it along its edges, I provide a bead or flange, A, extending to the rear. I construct the screen of oblong shape, with either square or round corners, ornamented or plain, and provide ribs or cleats A upon its back, the surfaces of which are-flush with the rear edges of the flanges A, thus affording an additional means for strengthening and stiffening the metallic screen, and also providing means for securing the legs or standards B thereto.
The legs or-standards B consist of a metallic strip provided at one end with suitable feet, B, and with perforations B B at suitable points for the reception of securing-bolts B the heads of which rest within the hollow metallic cleats A and the body portions of which extend outwardly therefrom. By means of the apertures formed in the standards it will be seen that the height of the screen upon the legs may be regulated by inserting the screwthreaded bolts through different apertures therein and securing the same in position by means of nuts 13.
\Vhen the screen is used in its lower position or in connection with a cooking-stove,the standards, as thus far described, will be found adequate, (see Figs. 1 and 2;) but when used in its higher or vertical position for use in connection with a heating-stove, (see Fig. 3,) I find it necessary to provide extension or supplemental standards 0, perforated as at 0, through which and the standards B the bolts 0 may pass, thus lengthening the standardsB to the desired height and forming a means for the adjustmentup and down of the screen.
The operation of transforming the screen herein described from the position capable for use in connection with a cooking-stove to that for use in connection with a heating-stove is at once apparent from the above description, in that it is only necessary to remove the standards from the upper and lower bolts, turn the screen to a vertical position, and insert the bolts of the supplemental or extension strips and insert the removed bolts in one of the upper apertures, O, of the extensions 0. It is also apparent that, if desired, the standards and feet thereof may be cast in one piece.
Having described my invention and its operation, what I claim is 1. In a screen, an oblong body portion, in combination with standards having extensionstrips, whereby the standards may be adapted to support the body portion, and the body portion is adapted to be supported by the standards with either a longer or a shorter edge uppermost, substantially as specified.
2. In a screen of the class described, the
combination, with a body portion provided vided with feet B and perforations B BQand 10 with hollow strengthening ribs and flanges, the with the extension-strip G,perforated as at O, former perforated and provided with securingand the bolts 13 C, substantially as specified. bolts, of standards provided with perforations In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 5 for the reception of said bolts, substantially as presence of two witnesses.
specified. FREDERICK STORK.
3. The combination of the body portion A, XVitnesses: having the flanges A and ribs or cleats A FRED WITZIG,
perforated as at Aflwith the standards B, no G. A. KUEOIIENMEISTER.
