Meister Attorney-Waters, Roditi, Schwartz & Nissen ABSTRACT: A vacuum chamber for degassing molten metal comprises a herrnetical cylindrical container provided with a flat duct having the form of a volute-shaped spiral. Connected at the ends of the duct are two branch pipes for introduction and discharge of molten metal.
VACUUM CHAMBER FOR DEGASSING MOLTEN METAL The present invention relates to vacuum chambers for degassing molten metal.
Widely known are vacuum chambers for degassing metals comprising a hermetical rectangular vessel, wherein a duct is provided, connected to branch pipes for supplying and tapping molten metal, the duct being directed along the chambers length.
Due to the fact that the degassing process is diffusive as to its nature and requires the prolonged holding of molten metal in the chamber, necessity arises to provide a metal-carrying duct, and, hence, the chamber of a considerable length. However, a considerable length of the chamber hinders its use in continuous casting machines.
The primary object of the present invention, is to provide a vacuum chamber for degassing molten metal with such construction of its container and duct, to permit increasing the length of a metal-carrying duct for enlarging the chambers overall dimensions.
This object is achieved by providing a vacuum chamber for degassing molten metal, comprising a hermetical vessel or container, provided with a duct connected to branch pipes intended for sucking in and tapping molten metal, in which, according to the invention, the container is given a cylindrical shape, while the duct has the form of a flat volute-shaped spiral.
The provision of the vessel or container shaped as a cylinder, and of the duct being of a smooth curvilinear outline,
reduces the chambers overall dimensions and enables it to be used in continuous casting machines intended, for example, for casting copper.
The present invention will become more fully apparent from a consideration of an exemplary embodiment thereof, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in
which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a vacuum chamber according to the invention; and
FIG. 2 is a plan view thereof.
The vacuum chamber comprises a hermetical cylindrical container 1 (FIG. 1 and 2), accommodating a metal-carrying duct 2 connected to branch pipes 3 and 4 respectively adapted for supplying molten metal into the container form a metal collector 5 and for tapping it into a metal collector 6. The duct 2 is of a smooth curvilinear shape in the form of a flat, voluteshaped spiral.
A water-cooled cover 7 is provided in the upper portion of the cylindrical container 1.
A branch pipe 8 is provided in the cover 7, intended for sucking off gases from the chamber. When degassing molten metal, the vacuum chamber operates as follows.
From the container 1 of the chamber, gas is sucked off through the branch pipe 8, and molten metal (liquid copper) is sucked into the container 1 under the action of vacuum from the metal collector 5, the metal is held for a certain period of time in the container so as to effect its degassing, being thereafter tapped through the branch pipe 4 into the metal collector 6. Then gas is again evacuated from the chamber through the branch pipe 8, and the metal degassing process is repeated.
Due to its small-size construction, the vacuum chamber for degassing molten metal may be disposed over any part of the copper continuous casting plant, which allows casting both vacuum-treated and ordinary metal.
. What we claim is:
l. A vacuum chamber for degassing molten metal, comprising: a hermetical cylindrical container; a duct in said container and having the form of a flat, volute-shaped spiral; and two branch pipes for sucking in and discharging molten metal, connected to said duct.
