883,625. Refining metals; removing occluded gases. FOUNDRY SERVICES INTERNATIONAL Ltd. Jan. 4, 1960 [Nov. 10, 1958], No. 36074/58. Classes 72 and 82(1). Molten metals are treated with a gas-generating substance such as for flushing occluded or dissolved gases by plunging in the molten metal a plunger-rod 1 (see Fig. 3) carrying as sleeves thereon blocks of the gas-generating substance 3, which may be 4 inch diam. 1“ inch thick sleeves of marble clips and powder with sodium silicate, wherein the tendency for the generated gas to travel upwards along the surface of the rod or through the body of the blocks is hindered or prevented by providing in the route of the gas a barrier of material of low gas-permeability, such as by alternating with impermeable blocks 4 of fireclay or graphite. The gas-generating blocks may be fluted on their outer circumferential surface (see Fig. 3) or on their inner surface (see Fig. 2) in which latter case the molten metal contacting the rod over the greater part of its surface provides the impermeable barrier, the inter vening blocks 4 being unnecessary.
