SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,035, dated March 29,1987. Application filed December 9, 1886. Serial No. 221,059. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ERNEST R. MIoHAELIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sycamore, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Letters Patent were issued to me, No. 339,996,

bearing date April 13', 1886; and it has forits object to suit animals of differentsizesthebody "or web portion of the halter being constructed of a'single piece of webbing, having a throatlatch and head-piece secured thereto, which form a part of said halter.

It also has for its object the employment in connection therewith-that is, the webbing of a peculiarly-constructedclip and ringfastening, the former for securing the ends of the halter and the latter for securing the hitching-tie loosely to the same.

To this end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claim.

D D indicate twosimilarly-inclined buckles orslides of peculiar form, having in their ends inclined slots (1 d (2 d and which are located at a point between the crown-piece and checkstraps and'diametrically opposite to each other.- Through the slots (1 d are passed and firmly riveted therein two ends of the throat-latch strap E, the opposite two ends being buckled together by a buckle, e, in the ordinary man ner. The opposite slots, (1 cl", of the slides or buckles D D carry the head-piece F, having its ends riveted in these slots similar to the ends of the throat-latch strap E, which passes "turn and lap is given the webbing, as clearly shownin Fig. l. The construction of these buckles being substantially the same as those employed for the same purpose in my patent above referred to, it is not deemed necessary herein to give a detailed description of the same.

Located 21 little above and in juxtaposition with the buckle G is a peeuliarly-constructed clip, -H, having upon its inner face and near it ends spurs h h, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, by means of which and bending over the ends of the clip itself this end of the webbing is snugly and permanently secured within the clip H after it has been passed through the horizontal slot of the buckle G.

I indicates another buckle, which islocated at one side and just below the buckle G and close to the free or loose end of the webbing.

J indicates a loop having cast or otherwise formed integrally therewith a ring,K,depending loosely from the chin-piece between the buckles I and G, between which it is permitted to slide, and to this ring K is attached the hitching strap or tie by means of a double integrally-constructed ring, K, resembling in configuration the figure 8, the end of the hitching strap or tie being passed through this ring or rings K and through the upper and larger looped ring, K, where it is firmly and securely held by clamping down the split ends of the smaller one of the double ring K. It will thus be seen that by having the smaller ring of the double ring K split any sized hitching strap or tie can be used. It will be further noticed that by this construction of halter a forward and downward pitch is advantageously given to the lower portion of the halter, which will bring, when the halter is in a Vertical position, the hitching-tie in a direct line with it.

The manner offorming the halter is as follows,

viz: One end of the webbing is passed through the upper horizontal slot of the buckle G and permanently secured thereto by means of the clip, when its free end is then passed through the longitudinal slots in the first inclined slide upon the same side of the halter where the initial fastening is made, and from the first slide it is thencepassed through the longitudinal slots in the opposite or second inclined slide to the buckle G, which rests diametrically opposite to the buckle G. It is then passed through the horizontal and upper slot of this buckle,where at this pointitis then given a turn and passed through one of the vertical slots of this buckle and lapped under the buckle, from whence it is then passed through the opposite vertical slot of this buckle. From thence it is passed through the longitudinal slots of the loweror free end fastening-buckle, and then it is slipped through the looped tie-ring and thence carried through the vertical slots of the buckle G, where the permanent fastening is made, and from thence it is again carried to the buckle Gandpassedagain through the vertical slots of this buckle. From thence it is again passed through the lower or fastening buckle,

. it being in the meantime lapped over that portion of the webbing heretofore carried through these buckles, and terminating at the fastening or securing buckle, where it is securely buokled,thus forming the nose and chin pieces.

The ends of the throat-latch and head piece or stall are each secured by means of rivets within the'inclined slots at the ends of the upper or inclined slides or buckles, which, with thecrown-piece of the web portion of the halter, constitute the head gearing of this portion of the halter.

My invention is simple in its construction, durable and effective in its operation, and cheaply manufactured. I

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An adjustable halter of the character described, comprising the crown-piece, cheekstraps, and nose and chin pieces, formed of an integral piece of webbing,in combination with the buckles G G. D D, the separate leather head-piece and throat-latch secured to the inclined loops .on the buckles D D, the tie secured to the nose-piece by means of the tierings, the web portion, head-piece, and tie each passing through and securely held by means of their respective buckles, slides, clip, and rings, the whole constructed, arranged, and operated as set forth.
