ORVILLE C. JOHNSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HALTER.
Specification of Iietters Patent.
Application filed September 25, 1914. Serial No. 863,438.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORVILLE' C. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Halters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in halters, and more particularly to a type of halter which may be quickly and conveniently adjusted for different sized heads.
The principal object is to provide an article of the foregoing character which will be of simple construction, inexpensive both as to material and manufacture, eflicient, and extremely durable.
As hereinafter fully described, my halter is composed of a long and a short length of rope (preferably a waxed, woven material) the former doubled and looped in a peculiar manner to form the main portion of the device, the short length being attached thereto to provide that portion of a halter known as the nose-piece; together with metal clamps, fastenings, a hook, and slidable adjusting pieces.
The construction or arrangement of the flexible portions of the device in connection with the metal parts disposed as shown in the drawings and hereinafter explained in detail, constitutes my invention in its broad sense; while the specific forms of the metal parts disclosed may be modified if found desirable or advantageous, without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the annexed claim.
Referring to the drawings in which like numerals designate like parts in the several views-Figure 1 shows a horses head with my halter in place as in actual use, the view being in perspective with the left side of the halter indicated in dash-lines. 2 is an enlarged detail View of a buckle upon the right side of the head for the purpose of adjustment to fit various sized heads. Fig. 3 is a View of the hook on the left side of the head being clamped to the cheek-piece and adapted for engaging a loop in the crownpiece of the flexible portion of the halter. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of a slidable adjusting member fitted on the two strands which form the throat-latch of the halter to adjust for any size neck. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the clamp used for attaching the nose-piece of the halter and for securing the buckle shown in Fig. 2.
Fig.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged perspective view of the combined clamp and ring which secures the throat latch and chin-piece together and to which the halter-lead is fastened. Fig. 7 is a detailed view to showclearly the throatlatch, and chin-piece in connection with clamp 8 and the slidable adjusting member 6.
As hereinbefore stated the flexible portion of my halter consists of two pieces, a long and short piece, the latter being the nose-piece which is indicated in the drawing by the numeral 1, and being secured to the other portion of the halter by means of'the clamps 2 and 3 of the type shown in Fig. 5. One end of the long flexible portion is shown secured in the clamp 4 which is also similar to that shown in Fig. 5. From the said end the long flexible portion may be traced in Fig. l downward to the throat where it passes through the slidable adjusting member 6 shown in Figs. l and 7 at the upper end of the throat-latch portion 7; thence to and through the clamp 8 (Figs. 6 and 7) where it doubles back and again passes through member 6; thence upward on the left side of the head (dash-lines) to the hook 9 (Fig. 3) where a loop is formed and the said hook clamped thereto by the clamp portion 10 of the hook; thence as the cheekpiece 11 to the clamp 3 from where it passes again through the clamp 8 forming the chinpiece 12, to the clamp 2; thence (forming the right cheek-piece 13) to the clamp 4. From this point it passes over the head and doubles back forming the crown-piece let, with the loop l5-to engage the hook 9, and thence through the adjusting buckle 5 one end of which is secured as shown in Fig. 2. When it is desired to remove the halter the loop 15 is disengaged from the two-pronged hook 9.
Referring to Fig. 3 it will be noted that by having the looped end of the flexible portion extended through the clamp portion 10 as shown the loop 15 will not accidentally become unfastened, as the two loops contact before the ends of the pronged hook are free of the loop 15. The sliding ring 16 makes accidental disengagement impossible when used in connection with such an arrangement.
By means of the buckle shown in Fig. 2 the crown-piece may be shortened or extended as may be desired, while the slidable adjusting member 6 (Fig. 4) enables the user to adjust the throat-latch to lit the neck. The memberv is so constructed that it locks Patented Ma 4,1915.
when the ropes are straight but releases when they are put in curved position without tension, 7
The combined clamp and ring 8 (Fig. 6) clamps onto the throatlatch and chin-piece jointly so that the ropes cannot slip back and forth, thus eliminating friction and wear thereon. The halter-lead is fastened to the ring portion. n
' Having described my improvements, 1
' claim as my invention:
A halter formed Ora length of flexible material having one end secured by a clamp,
thence passing downward and through a throat adjusting member, thence forward through a second clampwhere it doubles back forming the throat-latch and again passes through said throat adjusting member, thence upward upon the opposite side of the head to a clamp and hook member,
looping through the clamp of the clamp and hook member and extending forward therefrom forming one cheek-piece to a nosepiece, thence extending under the chin through the second clamp to form the chinpiece to the opposite end of the nose-piece, thence extending to form the other cheekpiece and to and through the first above mentioned clamp, passingthence over the head and doubling back to form a crown: piece and a loop to engage the hook portion of the said clamp and hook member, and having :its free end secured by an adjusting buckle disposed below the crown of the head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
