Definitions
- An end section for an airport jetty adapted to engage with the fuselage of an aircraft, said end section having side elements pivotable independently of each other about an axis virtually coinciding with the forward lower edge of the section, and a roof supported by said side elements to be moved along with their pivoting movements, characterized in that the roof consists of a rearward plate member slidably secured to the end of each of said side elements, and a forward rocking member pivoted to said plate member, said rocking member comprising the forward upper edge of the end section, the ends of said forward edge being flexibly secured to said side elements.
- This invention relates to an end section for an airport jetty, adapted to engage with the fuselage of an aircraft, said end section having side elements pivotable independently of each other about an axis virtually coinciding with the forward lower edge of the section, and a roof supported by said side elements to be moved along with their pivoting movements, hereinafter referred to as an end section of the kind described.
- an end section of the kind described wherein the roof consists of a rearward plate member slidably secured to the end of each of said side elements, and a forward rocking member pivoted to said plate member, said rocking member comprising the forward upper edge of the end section, the ends of said forward edge being flexibly secured to the side elements.
- FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view on the vertical median plane of the end section according to the invention
- FIG. 2 is a view similar to that of FIG. 1, but showing the movable parts in an extended position;
- FIG. 3 is a plan view of the end section shown in FIG. 1;
- FIG. 4 is a plan view similar to that of FIG. 3, but showing an extended position as in FIG. 2;
- FIG. 5 is a section on the line VV of FIG. 3, showing the connection between a side element and the roof of the end section;
- FIG. 6 is a section on the line VIVI of FIG. 5;
- FIGS. 7 and 8 are sections on the line VII-VII of FIG. 3, showing the connection of the rocking member with a side element.
- a tubular end section 2 mounted on an airport jetty 1 is a tubular end section 2, having four fixedly interconnected walls 3, 4, 5, and 6, and side elements 9 and 10 mounted on the bottom wall for pivoting movement about an axis 8 substantially coinciding with the lower edge 7.
- the side elements can be pivoted by hydraulic jacks 12, shown for the side element 10 in FIGS. 1 and 2, and energized in some conventional manner or other.
- the upper wall or roof 13 consists of a rearward roof section 14 and a forward rocking member 15.
- the roof section 14 is slidingly connected with the side elements 9 and 10 by means of a plurality of rollers 16, spaced along an arc of a circle having its centre in the pivot axis 8, and cooperating with a channel-shaped side member 17 of the roof section 14 (FIG. 5 and 6).
- the side member 17 is provided with strips 18 engaging in grooves 19 of the rollers 16.
- the rocking member is pivoted to the roof section 14 by means of a pivot 20 provided in the pointed front 21 of the roof section 14. Furthermore the rocking member 15 is flexibly coupled at the ends of its forward portion 22 with the side elements 10 (FIGS. 7 and 8) by means of a ball joint 23 comprising a ball connected to the rocking member 15 through a strip 25 and a cylindrical sleeve 26 connected at right angles to the side element 10.
- the ball 24 is capable of both rotation and translation in the sleeve 26, which makes it possible for the rocking member to be moved from the position of FIG. 7 to that of FIG. 8 and vice versa.
- the forward edge 22 of the rocking member 15, the forward edge 7 of the bottom 3, and the forward edges of the side elements 9 and 10 are covered with soft, resilient shapes (not shown), for example of foam rubber to provide for proper wind-tight connection with the fuselage of an aircraft.
- the hydraulic jacks 12 are energized to move the side elements 9 and 10 forwardly, taking along the rocking member 15, through the ball joints 23, into engagement With the fuselage of the aircraft. Since the side elements 9 and 10 can move independently of each other, the rocking member can adapt itself to the contour of the fuselage.
- the roof section 14 is slidingly taken along relative to the side elements 9 and 10, through the pivot 20; the velocity at which this movement is performed is the average of the velocities of the sides elements 9 and 10 at their upper ends.
- the end section according to the invention requires no weather-proofing by means of flexible fabric, such as, for example, accordion-type bellows, by virtue of which the end section according to the invention has a greater range of deformation, and maintenance and replacement of parts is minimized.
- An end section for an airport jetty to engage with the fuselage of an aircraft comprising a pair of side elements (9, 10) and a roof (13) supported by said side elements and movable therewith, pivot means (8, 8) on lower ends of said side elements for independently pivotally connecting respective ones of said side elements to said jetty, said roof comprising a rearward roof section (14) and a forward rocking member (15), means for slidably supporting said rearward roof section on the upper end of each of said side elements (9, 10), pivot means (20) pivotally mounting said forward rocking member (15) on said roof section (14), and coupling means (23) flexibly coupling said forward rocking member to the upper forward edge portions of said side elements.
- said coupling means (23) are comprised of a ball joint means including a cylindrical sleeve (26) having its axis normal to said side elements and ball means (24) mounted in said sleeve for pivotal and axial movement relative to said sleeve.
- roller means 16 are comprised of rollers having circumferential grooves formed therein for cooperating with edge portions of said channel-shaped side members (17).
- said coupling means (23) are comprised of a ball joint means including a cylindrical sleeve (26) having its axis normal to said side elements and ball means (24) mounted in said sleeve for pivotal and axial movement relative to said sleeve.
- said rearward roof section includes channel-shaped side members (17) of arcuate configuration with the centre of curvature being located in the axis of the pivot means (8, 8) on lower ends of said side elements (9, 10), and a roller means (16) carried by said side elements and cooperating with said side members.
- said rearward roof section includes channel-shaped side members 17) of arcuate configuration with the centre of curvature being located in the axis of the pivot means (8, 8) on lower ends of said side elements (9, 10), and roller means (16) carried by said side elements and cooperating with said side members.
