Abstract

1327901 Vehicle cleaning apparatus W E THORNTON-TRUMP 21 May 1971 [13 April 1970] 16414/71 Heading B7J Washing and dusting apparatus for use on the upper surfaces of aircraft comprises support means (turntable 12), an elongated boom structure 13 preferably having first, second and third elements 14, 16 and 18 respectively, pivotally connected in series for articulated swinging movement about horizontal axes caused by first, second and third boom actuator means, 20, 22 and 24 respectively, and coupling means 30 for coupling brush means 28 to the third element 18. The coupling means 30 may be adjusted about a shoulder joint at shaft 112, Fig. 3, by actuator 114; about the longitudinal axis of arm 34 at upper arm joint 122 by motor 116; about an elbow joint at shaft 172 by motor (118), Fig. 4 (not shown); about the longitudinal axis of arm 34 at wrist joint 124 by motor 120; and reciprocally by a telescopic member 32 operated by actuator 128. Levelling means 19 extend from the coupling means 30 to the support means 12, to maintain the orientation of the coupling means 30 and an adjacent operator's seat 26 constant with respect to the vertical during movement of the boom structure. Elements 14 and 16 are pivotally interconnected by a mechanism comprising pivotal links 62 and 67, which mechanism is connected to the second element 16 by the actuator 22, all of the actuators 20, 22, 24 and 114 and motors 116, 118 and 120 being preferably hydraulically operated.
