' HARNESS-MOUNTING. No. 357,575. I Patented Feb. 15, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN R. OAHOONE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
HARNESS-MOUNTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,575, dated February 15, 1887.
' Application filed August 18, 1886. Serial No. 211,187. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. CAHOONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ewark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Mountings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the'accompany ing drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to reduce cost ofconstructiomsecure greater facility in manufacture, and produce a more durable article.
' The invention consists in improved harnessmounting having the construction. and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter set forth in the clauses of the claim.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a buckle embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a side elevation, of the same with the covering removed, showing certain formations whereby said covering is held in place.
In said drawings, a is a cast frame of any suitable form, and having or adapted to receive a tongue of metal in the ordinary way. The inner portion of the frame, d, is or may be curved or rounded in such a way as that no sharp corners or edges willbe presented to the strap when passed through the buckle, thus reducing the liability to cut or wear out the same. The inner portion, (7, of the casting is exposed or uncovered in the complete buckle, said portion being in the form of a flange or flanges, on the outer face of which, in the middle thereof, is formed a longitudinal rib, 12, extending at or approximately at right angles thereto, forming angles into which the covering is forced. Said rib is nearly flat, and is provided at several points thereon with holding lugs or pins 0, which are cast integral therewith. These project from the opposite sides of said rib, preferably to a point flush with the opposite edges of the flange d, and, being polished, serve as ornaments; or, these lugs may be shorter, so as not to show through the covering. The said lugs 0, when the covering is pressed in place, hold said covering firmly and securely.
The covering 6 may be of hard rubber, celluloid, or other plastic material, which, when pressed in place, will close over the rib and around the said pins or lugs and be held by them firmly and securely, thus making a joint with the opposite edges of the flange d.
The flange d may rise a-little above the covering and its'edges be rounded down to meet the same, so as to protect the covering from the wear of the strap.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In harness-mountings, a frame having a flange 0r rib provided with pins or lugs constructed to hold acovering firmly and securely, substantially as herein shown anddescribed.
2. In a buckle or other harness-mountings, a frame having an inner flange or portion, d, a rib, 11, formed longitudinally on the outer face thereof, said rib being provided on its opposite sides with pins or lugs c, and apartial covering of plastic material, the edges of which are turned over said rib and engage with the flange 01, being protected thereby and held in place by the pins, the frame providing an articlc of manufacture, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of July, 1886.
EDWIN R. OAHOONE. Witnesses:
