SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,230, dated December 28, 1883.
Application filed July 8, 1886. Serial No. 207,516. (No model.)
to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which.
form a part of this specification.
This invention relates-to an improvement in nursing-chairs; and it consists in an attaching-clamp, an adj usting-arm, and a revolving couch, and having details of construction, as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective of the device attached to the chair. Fig. 11 is a detail, partly in section, showing the arrangement by which the arm is adjusted in the socket on the chairclamp. Fig. III is a detail in section, show-- ing the upper end of the arm, apo'rtion of the couch, thejournal on which it is pivoted, and the coil-spring.
In the drawings, A represents a chair of any ordinary construction. To the side of the chair is attached a screw-clamp, 011 the sides of which is a socket, E. In the socket on the clamp is a sleeve, F, which passes freely through it, and is held in any position in the socket E by the thumb-screw f. The standard is of such form aswill bring the upper end into a position about in front of the person sitting in the chair.
Ois a vertical socket in the upper end of the arm, to receive the journal on which the couch is fastened.
Bis a couch of a convenient size to support a nursing-infant, and of a shape to conform nearly to that of the childs body, and also to accommodate itself to that of a person sitting in the chair-that is to say, the couch is narrowed near its ends by curving inwardly those portions of the two sides most likely to come in contact with the body of a person sitting in'the chair, to make those port-ions conform as nearly as possible thereto. pivot b of this couch is surrounded by a spiral spring, 8, which gives the couch a slight vertical elasticity, and also means of making a small adjustment vertically, the spring being about strong enough to counterbalance the weight of the child.
The arm D at its lower end passes through the sleeve in the socket on the clamp H, and turns'freely in it, and is provided with a shoulder, G, on the lower end, which rests on the top of the sleeve and supports the arm.
The operation of this device is as follows: The person to nurse the child sits in the chair, and bringing the couch to her front adjusts its height by means of the thumbscrewf, and with the child lying on thecouch can nurse it either side by reversing the couch on its pivot. The couch is narrow near each end to conform to the form of the person in the chair, and is concaved laterally for the purpose of comfort and greater security against falling out It is not my purpose to claim anything shown in my application of a recent date for improvement in nursingchairs, as this invention is composed of details not generally found in that application; but
What I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a couch attachment for a nursingchair, the combination of the clamp H, having the socket E, formed integrally therewith, the sleeve F, having the thumb-screw f, the arm D, having a shoulder, G, to rest on the sleeve F, the socket O, and the couch B, arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the couch pivoted on the upper end of the pivoted arm B, a
