IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-RESTS FOR BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,395, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. WALTON, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Elevated Head-Rest for Beds, Lounges, &c., of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to dispense with, and to present an economical and comfortable substitute for, ordinary bolsters which are employed in beds for elevating the pillows.
I attain this object by two light boards or frames, A A, hinged together at one edge, 00, and maintained apart at the opposite edges by two or more springs, B, as shown in the perspective view, Figure 1, of the accompanying drawing. The elastic rest thus formed is placed beneath the head of the mattress D, as shown in the side'view, Fig. 2, thereby rendering bolsters unnecessary, and presenting a more comfortable support, owing to the elasticity imparted to the upper board or frame by the springs.
Lugs i may be so hinged to the opposite edges of the lower board or frame that they head higher than others. My improved headrest presents a still further advantage over ordinary bolster in inducing the mattress to assume a gradual curve, which is better adapted to a reclining position, and more comfortable than the usual abrupt elevation afforded by ordinary bolsters.
I claim as my invention The combination, in a head-rest, of the hinged frames A A, springs B, and movable lugs i t, for the purpose specified.
