UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. MUNROE, OF LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CARPET-LINING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,576, dated November 30, 1886.
' Application filed April 8, 1856. Serial No. 198,260. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES S. MUNROE, of Lexington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Lining, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a carpet-lining composed of one or more laps or layers of cotton fiber, or of other suitable elastic or yielding materiahpreferably cotton fiber, and of one or more sheets of paper, or of other suitable material, covering either one or both, preferably both, sides of the cotton .lap, and one at least of which is intermediate of its width doubled,or folded upon itself and along the so doubled and folded portion secured to the filling lap or layer or layers by a line of stitches, which pass through the combined thickness of paper and filling at and along such doubled and folded portion of the paper sheet or sheets.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, the figure is a perspective view of the improved lining of this invention.
In the drawing, A is a lap or layer of elastic or yielding material and making the filling; and B B are the paper sheets, covering the opposite sides of saidfilling A, one sheet to each side.
along its length and intermediate of its width in two parallel lines is doubled or folded upon itself, giving at each of such parts of the paper One, B, of the paper sheets, as shown,
sheet three thicknesses, a b 0, thereof, lying the one upon the other, and severally, as well as the filling and the opposite papersheet, B secured together by a line of stitches, d, passing through their combined thickness. The doubling or folding over of the paper sheet B, as stated, acts as a preventive to the tearing away by the stitches of the paper sheet, and otherwise to improve the hold of the stitches upon the combined layers of material making up the lining, as described.
As shown, the lining has only two rows or lines of stitches, one, B, of the paper sheets being doubled or folded upon itself at and along each of such lines; but obviously the paper sheet B may be similarly doubled or folded upon itself in and along more or less than two lines, "and the opposite paper sheet, B similarly doubled or folded, if so desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A carpet-lining composed of a paper covering and an elastic filling, and the paper covering folded or doubled upon itself and along such doubled or folded portion orportions, the whole secured together by a line of stitches, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
JAMES S. MUNROE.
