NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR L. JOHNSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO COMEY & JOHNSON, OF SAME PLACE.
APPAREL-HAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,529, dated October 23, 1900.
Application filed July 12, 1900. Serial No. 23,300. (No model.)
To n/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and-useful Improvement in Hats, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as todistinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to the construction of hats; and it consists of means hereinafter fully described.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in'de'tail certain means embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing the figure represents a perspective view of a hat constructed according to my invention, showing the end of the strip which forms such hat detached and portions cut away to illustrate the formar tion thereof.
Said hat consists of a foundation-strip of flexible material A, such as is used in the construction of hats, and which may consist of a straw, chip, cotton, cardboard, jute, hemp, or the like braid, plait, strip, or other stiifener covered with a strip of cloth or similar material suitable for an outside hat-covering B. Said cloth strip is placed upon the fou ndationstrip, doubled over one edge thereof, andits free edges secured on both sides, as shown, so as to cause said free edges to be parallel with the strip. The foundation so covered is then wound spirally and the contiguous edges secured to eachother by sewing or other suitable means.
By the use of the above-described meansa hat is form ed having substantially` the weight and flexibility of the foundation.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the means herein disclosed, provided the means covered by any one of the following claims be employed. p
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention- 1. The hat herein described, the same consisting of a flexible plait secured within a strip of folded fabric, said strip of folded fabric formed into a series of convolutions each convolution being stitched 'to its preceding convolution.
2. The hat herein described, the same consisting of a flexible foundation secured within a strip of folded fabric, said combined foundation and fabric formed into a series of convolutions each convolution being stitched to its preceding convolution.
Signed by me this 8d day of July, 1900.
ARTHUR L. JOHNSON.
