UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC KESSLER, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
i Specicationof Iietters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24', 1914.
Application led January 28, 1913. Serial AN o. 744,612.
To all whom t may concern: I
Be it known that I, ISAAC KEssLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vests, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to improvements in vests, and more particularly to vests or waistcoats worn by gentlemen, the object of the invention being to so construct the garment that it will conform to the shape of the body and neatly lit the) figure without the necessity for the ordinary strap and buckle commonly employed at the back of the garment.
A further object is to provide an im-v proved construction and arrangement of elastic strips confined between the lining' and the back of the garment, secured to the back of the garment and causing the garment to be elastically drawn at both sides of the center of the back, so as to compel the garment to conform in shape to the shape of the figure.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in,
the claim. a l
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a rear view of a vest embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view with a portion of the lining of they vest broken away and showing the vest extended to full, width. Fig. 3 `is an exaggerated view in longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the vest as it is drawn in by the elastic strips. y
In constructing my improvements, I secure at the waist line of the garment, two elastic strips 1, 1, which are sewed tothe back 2 of 'the garment by lrows of stitching 1 adjacent the upper and lower edges of the strips 1, and at their ends are sewed to inelastic strips 3. These strips 3 are in turn sewed at their ends in the seams ofthe garment as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4.
For clearness of description, I shall give the front material the reference numeral 4,
and the ulining for the front the reference numeral 5.
The back 2 and the back lining 6 are are secured. In Iother words, the ends of the inner strips 3 are sewed in with the seam. The outer ends of the outer strips 3 are sewed in with the seams 8 which connect the back and front, and back and -front linings as indicated clearly in Figs. 3 and 4.
AIt will therefore be noted that between the back and the lining of the vest, I locate two strips 1 of elastic which are connected to the seams at the center and at the sides by strips of inelastic material 3. Furthermore, the elastic strips l are secured directly to the back 2 by lines of stitching. This stitching is done when the elastic strip is eX- tended as indicated in Fig.- 3, so that when the elastic strip contracts, it gathers the materia-l o f the back 2 as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4. As the back 2 and the lining 6 for the back are of practically the same size, when the back is gathered, the lining will remain more or less smooth, at least, it will not be apparently gathered at any particular point.
The vest is therefore capable of an eXtenj sion at the waist equal to the maximum size 0f the back and the lining, and will fit any figure from such maximum to the minimum, and remain smooth on the ligure. The strain of the elastic strips 1 is taken uplv bythe inelastic. strips 3, and-is therefore distributed so that there is n0 tendency to break the binding threads.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim. j
Having thus described my invention, what I cla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A ve'st having a back, a front, side seams connecting said back to said front, linings for the front and back, elastic strips secured.
stitching arranged adjacent the edges of the strips, and normally holding the back gathered, and inelastic strips secured to 'the ends of the elastic strips and attached at their ends to the seams of the vest, al1 of said strips being arranged between the'back and the back lining, substantiallysas described.
In testimony nwhereo'f I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 1c two subscribing Witnesses.
f Y ISAAC KESSLER.
