UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE GASTON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
OVERALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,070, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed July 15, 1885.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE GASTON, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements designed particularly for o-veralls, but applicable also for pantaloons.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and will first be described and then claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the overalls. Fig. 2 is a front View. Fig. 3 is a cross-section, larger scale, of one leg of the garment. (See 00 as, Fig. 2.) Fig. 4 is a section on line y showing the construction of the fly and the pocket.
The letter A designates the back ofleg, and B the front. The entire back of the garment is made of material having a single thickness, while the front is double or composed of two thicknessesthe outer, B, and the inner, B. In Fig. 1 a portion, 0, of the outer thickness is shown as though torn away, for the purpose of exposing to view the inner thickness, B. The single material in the back A and the double material B B in the front are shown also in Fig. 3,which represents a cross-section of one leg of a garment. The back A and the inner thickness, B, of the front of each leg together comprise one piece of fabric, the two edges (1 of which are united by a vertical seam at don theinner side of the leg from the crotch 6 down. In forming the leg, therefore, there is no seam on the outer side. The extra front or outer thickness, B, of material for each leg is attached by having one of its edges f (see Fig. 3) entered between the two edges (1 of the leg-seam, and secured thereto by the same thread which makes the said seam, thereby, in attaching this portion of the outer thickness,no additional expense or labor is involved. The edge g,which extends down the outer side of the leg, is folded under and secured against the inside front, B, by stitches. The doublethick front admits of the formation of a fly without the employment of an extra piece or an inside facing-piece, as usual. This is shown in Fig. 4. The outer part of the fly, h,is formed by folding inward the edge of the extra front thickness, B, and the inside part, 2', is formed by folding inward the edge of the inner thick- Serial No.171,671. (No model.)
ness, B, and a line of stitches extending up 5 and down parallel with the folded edges is then made through both thicknesses and both inward-folded edges.
From this description and the drawings it will be seen the entire front of the garment is 6 double.
Pockets L are formed between the inner and outer thicknesses by one or more rows, a, of stitches, extending down each side and across where it is desired the bottom of the pocket 6 shall come. Thus no other material is required for the pockets.
The front outer thickness may be stitched and united to the inner thickness at the crotch, if desired; or a crotch re-enforce may be used, 7 like that shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States granted mc June 5, 1885., No. 317,334.
In other respects not herein specially described the garment may be made in the or 73 dinary manner.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States- 1. Overalls or pantaloons having the mate- 8c rial in the back single and that of the front double thick, and having the edge of each front thickness at the fly folded inward, and a line of stitches which 'pass through both thicknesses and both inward-folded edges, whereby an extra facing-piece for the fly is dispensed with, as set forth.
2. Overalls or pantaloons having the back A and front B of each leg in one piece of fabric, the twoedges of which are united by a go seam, d, at the inner side of the leg, an outside or extra thickness, B, covering the legfront, and having one edge, f, entered in the said seam at the inner side of the leg, and the other edge, secured against the outer side 5 of the said leg-front, and one or more rows, 01, of stitches which pass through the fabric of the said leg-front and outside thickness and extend in a direction to give form to a pocket located between the leg-front and said outside [O( thickness, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. GASTON.
