NITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE. l
WILLIAM COHLMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
`TRoUsl-:Rs R ovERALLs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,297, dated November 9, 1886. Application filed July 29, 1836. serai Nofzoaliao. No moda.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM OoHLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Trousers or Overalls, of which the following is a specication.
The main object of my invention is to dispense with the patch pockets with which overalls are usually provided, and this object I attain by forming a pocket by means of an extension of the leg-piece of the overalls7 as fully described hereinatter.
In the accompanying drawings7 Figure 1 is a rear view of a pair of overalls, showing my improvement applied to hip-pockets. Fig. 2 is a section on the line l 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a View of amodification. Fig. 4 is a side view of a pair of overalls,`show ing my improvement applied to the formation of a side pocket, and Fig. 5 is a sect-ion on the line 3 t,l Fig. 4:.
A A are the pieces forming the rear portions of the legs ofthe overalls, B being the breast-piece, and bib the shoulder-straps. It is usual in overalls to unite the two legpieces A A together by a seam, w, at the rear of the seat, the outside patch for the hip or side pocket being afterward sewed on; but this plan is objectionable, not only on account of the rear seam, but also because of the time and labor required to properly form and sew on the patch pockets.
In carrying out my invention I provide each leg-piece A A with an extension, a, Figs. 1 and 2, the extensionof the piece A projecting on the outside of the piece A, and the extension of the latter piece projecting on the inner side ofthe piece A, or vice versa. The two pieces are then stitched together on the line x, and a line of stitches, y, is run around each ofthe extensions a, except at the top. This construction provides one pocket on the outside and another on the inside of the overalls; but in some cases the inner extension may be dispensed with and only onehip-pocket formed.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a pair of overalls in;
which a number of pockets or compartments are formed, the extension u in this case reaching to the side seam, w, and aseries of lines of stitching,y,dividing the extension into a nu'mber of compartments. Overalls of this char- ,acter are intended mainly for carpenters, pa-
per-hangers, and artisans Whose ywork requires that they yshall have a number of tools within easy reach. p
In Figs. 4 and.5 I have shown side pockets formed by rextensions ct of the pieces A A underlappingthe front pieces, D D', of the leg.
Thesepockets are stitched on the bottom'and on one side and partly up the other side, leaving the top and part of one side open, the eX- tension a being entirely covered and only the stitching exposed.
It will be evident that trousers can be provided with pockets in the manner described without departing from my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. Overalls or trousers having a pocket consisting of a portion projecting from one of the leg-pieces and overlapping and 1permanently secured to the adjacent leg-piece, all substan. tially as specified.
2. Overalls or trousers, each of the rear legpieces ot' which has a projecting pocket portion overlapping and permanently secured to the adjoining leg-piece, one of said overlapping pocket portions being on the outside and the other on the inside, all substantially as specified.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
