Description
l L. asma?. COMBINED UNDERSHIRT ANDDRAWERS. No 186 693.' Patented san.so,1e77.

UNITED STATES muon PATENT LEWIS R. SHARP, OF NEW YORK, Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,693, dated January 30, 1877 application tiled November 1'7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS R. SHARP, of the county of New York, city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gentlemens Undershirt and Drawers Combined, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is an improvement in gentlemens wearing apparel 5 and has for its object to economize material and labor in the process of manufacture, to produce a garment combining ease and comfort, and to furnish to the market, in a single article of sale, the garments for gentlemen before mentioned.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of my garment, and Fig. 2 a rear view of same.
The garment, as shown in drawings, is fashioned from nine pieces of material, although economy may suggest the use of a greater or less number. The garment, as will be seen in Fig. l, is open in front, to be fastened around the wearer with buttons, or equivalents, extending from the neck to the waist, and is allowed to remain free and open thence to the crotch. The slit, which begins at the neck and extends to the crotch, continues in the back, as `shown in Fig. 2, to the waist.
It will be observed, in Fig. 2, that I form an oblique seam moving upward from the waist-line, with plaitingfrom'the same downward aboutthe seat. This is to allow freedom and ease to the wearer in bending forward or sitting down.
I have shown the garment quite full at the waist, giving to it, on that line, about the capacity of an ordinary shirt, which makes the drawers or lower part rather fuller than those in ordinary wear, although, if preferred,
it might be held in at the waist to more nearly fit the form. The legs at the ankles are provided with the usual means of security. The,
seam ruiming laterally across the back ofthe garment may be more or less oblique, as may be required in actual practice.
I am aware that garments consisting of combined shirt and drawers, with openings from the neck in front to the ordinary horizontal seams behind at the waist, are not novel 5 also, that garments open in front from the neck to the crotch, and having at the same time a re-enforcement at the back extending up in folds to protect the spine of the wearer, are not new.
These I do not claim as my invention. My garment, as before stated, has lan oblique waist-seam running laterally, and forming an Aobtuse angle, the object of which, in combination with the full and open seat, is to give ease to the wearer, and to facilitate the movement of bending and sitting.
I claiml. As a new article of manufacture, a garment consisting of a combined shirt and drawers, open from the neck in front to the crotch, and having an oblique 'waist-seam behind, forming an obtuse angle, which terminates the opening from the crotch, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Thecombinedgarmenthaving the oblique waist-seam, in combination with the plaited seat, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my'own I afijx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS a. SHARP.
