Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SHAEFER, 0F LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED ATTACHMENT FOR BEDSTEAD- RAILS.
Specification forming part o' Letters Patent N o. 35,18%, dated May 6, ISG?.
To @ZZ whom, it muy corteo/"IL:
Be it known that LJOHN SHAEFER, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of lennsylvana, have invented a new and Improved Device l'or Attaching1 the Rails to the Posts in ledstrazls; and l do hereby declare that the followingl is a full and exact description thereof, reference being' had to the accompanying;l drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention is very simple, and readily understood by the drawings.
The two wrought or cast iron plates A B, Figure l, tace each other. The plate A has two slots, r e, arranged in two opposite corners thereof, or in diagonal positions, substantially as shown, the several plat es of the whole bedstead beingl ali lie or having the slots in the same corners. 'lhe lower side of each slot is beveled. This plate is let Hush into the wood ol. the post, having a Inortised hole behind each slot l'or the reception of the projecting and lmveled hooks l) D on plate B, this latter beingI aliixed to each end of the rails by the s(.-rew-holes shown. 'lhese hooks are also arranged diagonally opposite to each' other in positions precisely eorreslioinling;l with the positions ot' the slots in the plates A A, and all the plates of Jthe same bedstead have the positions ol.' the hooks alike, so that as the plates are reversed on opposite ends of the bedsteaderails the four corners ot' the l Fig. 3 shows the union of the two plates A B with the bevel d on the hook and slot, to draw both pieces (the post and rail) iirmly together, making a tight joint and preventing` all lateral motion, being firmly locked together, as the hook overlaps and sinks to the shank in the slot; Fig. 2, a side view of A and B on their edges. iVhile these plates lock firmly with each other in a diagonal direction and hold the parts to which they are attached so as to secure solidity, they admit of being readily detached by a simple tap of the hand beneath vthe rail, and will beV found as desirable for their simplicityas for their efiiciency. The hooks and slots being` in the corners, also are capable of being placed farther apart on plates of a `given size, so that additional firmness is secured in that respect. The drawings clearly show their construction and their application, so that no further description is deemed necessary.
I am aware that various wedge-shaped or beveled flanges and castings are in use, as are also revolving' hooks and other differently-arranged devices; but I am not aware of any substantially the saine.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The diagonal combination of thebevel-slot ted plate A with the bevel-hooked plate B, th e whole being constructed and arranged and att-ached in the manner and for the purpose specified, substantially as set forth.
JOI-IN SHAEFER.
