E. R. KING LOCK AND .BRACE FOR BEDS Fild Jan. 2 1925 42 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Dec. 28, 1926.
UNETE tenses EDGAR R. KING, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
LOCK AND BRACE FOR BEDS.
Application filed January 2, 1925.
My invention relates to a lock and brace for beds and has especial relation to means for detachably securing the side rails of a bed to the head and foot portions thereof, which securing means also provide means for bracing the bed against distortion.
The object of my invention is to provide a means of securing the side rails which pro vides for their ready attachment and detachment and which when the parts of the bed are secured together makes a rigid construction for the same.
I accomplish the objects of my invention as will be more fully hereinafter set out in the drawings, specification and claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing the locking and bracing means in plan and the portions of the bed proper in section.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the double post corners for the foot of the bed.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of a single post corner for the head of the bed.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view on a larger scale showing the lock and brace for the foot of the bed, and
Fig. 5 a similar perspective view showing the interlocking lug member which is secured to the bed rail.
Fig. 6 is a sectional plan on a line corresponding to the line VI--VI of Fig. showing the lug member and the brace member interlocked, this latter View being approximately full size.
Referring now to the drawings in which the various parts are indicated by numerals, 1()L() are the side rails of the bed. 11 are the head posts and 12 the head board. 13, H- are. the foot posts which are shown in pairs connected by a curved rail 15. 1G is the foot board. The lock and brace for the foot of the bed comprises a brace 17 preferably of L or angle cross section extending from the post 13 to the post 141-, and secured to these posts by some such means as the screws 18. If desired a dowel pill-l9 shown in Fig. (5 may also be provided which dowel pin would be let into the post 13. The brace 17 has an integral part 9.0 which extends longitudinally forward along theside of the bed rail 10, this part being provided with openings 21, 22, (more clearly shown in Fig. 4), each of which openings has a downwardly and rearwardlv inclined forward edge 23, which is bevelled in cross section as shown in Figs.
Serial No. 85.
at and 6. The extension 20 is also provided with a clamping lug 24 which projects from the face thereof and which is provided with a hole or aperture 25 to receive a binding bolt 26. It will be noted that the opening 22 in the extension 20 extends rearwardly beyond the lug 24 so that the extension 20 is cut away above this lug. The rail member which interlocks with the brace extension comprises a plate 27 which is provided with holes 28 through which screws may be passed to secure it to the rail 10. This rail member is provided with forwardly extending undercut lugs 29 which have the undercut portion bevelled on the'same angle as the bevelled front edges 23 of the brace extension. These lugs 29 are also inclined downwardly and rearwardly at the same angle as the edges 23 thus locking the face of the plate 27 against the back of the brace extension 20 and at the same time forcing the end of the bed rail 10 against the post 14, in this manner securely locking and bracing this rail against the post. The rail member 27 is also provided with a forwardly extending clamping lug 30 which is provided with a. slot 31, this lug when these parts are assembled registering above the clamping lug 24 of the brace extension so that'a binding bolt 26 may be inscrted through the opening. 32 is a thumb nut for the bolt 26, which thumb nut is tightened to draw the lugs 24;-30 together-and gitiire securely lock and brace the parts of the i The head of the bed is provided with a 1 similar locking member which has a brace section 33 which is secured to the post 11 and the head board 12 and from which a rearwardly extending locking member 2O projects. This locking member 20* interlocks with the rail member 27 on the head end of the rail 10.
In use the bracing n'iei'x'ibers are fastened to the head and foot portions of the bed re spectively and the rail members to the insides of the bed rails at both ends thereof and the parts of the bed are so shipped. To erect the bed, the lugs on the rail members are passed through the opening in the extensions of the brace members and the rails pushed down. The locking bolts are then passed through the clamping lugs, the thumb nuts put in place and tightened and the erection of the bed structure is complete.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
