- bedstead-fasteners.
The object of the present `invention is to improve the construction et' bedstead-fasten- 'ers and t0 provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive one ofgreat strength andv durability/adapted to be readily applied to the side 'aile and corner-posts of a bedsteadand capa le of enabling the same to be readily connectil and separated for setting up and taking clown bedsteads.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bedstead-fastener of this construction which will eiiectually prevent vermin from obtaining access to the interlocking parts and which wili presenttightly-iitting metal` lic surfaces surrounding the same, whereby the joints of a bedstead will ne praxzticallyA vermin-prooi. I
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a bedstead-fastener which will not require recessing the corner-posts to receive the members or elements which are applied to thesame and to enablethe fastener to 'ne concealed from view from the exterior of the bedstead and to provide a tighttting connection between the rails and the posts.

plate or member i,
y cesses in rear thereof.
With these and other objects in view the Like numerals of reference designate cor responding parte in all the gures of the drawl designates an oblong plate or member secured to the inner face 2 of a corner-post 3 and projecting therefrom and provided with perforations it for the reception of screws 5 or other suitable fastening devices forsecuring theyplate or member l to the corner-post 3. The .plate or member l vis provided with vupper and lower vertical slots 6, and the corner-post is provided in rear of the slot 6 with vertical recesses 7, registering with the slots and adapted to permit hook-shaped tongues 8 to engage the plate or member 1. The vertical recesses 7,which are narrow, are covered by the plate or element 1, and vermin is eftectualiy 1 f excluded from them by a plate or member 9 upon which the tongues 8 aremounted. The
tongues, which are approximately l..shaped,` are provided with inner upright beveled edges 10 for engaging the inner or rear face of the whereby the two plates or members and the side-rail 11 and the cornerpost 3 are drawn tightlytogether when the parts are interloeked. The metal plates o1' members lit tightly together and prevent vermin from entering the vertical slots and the re- The plateyor member l has a pair of slots 6 atits upper portion and a single slot at its lower portion, the hookshaped tongues being correspondingly arranged, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The plate or member 9 is Lshaped in crosssection, being composed of two wings or' anges arranged at rightangles and provided with perforations tion of screws or other suitable securing them to the end and the side rail. end with a recess l2 of a depth approximately equal to the combined thickness of theplates or members to enable the same to be housed within the recess of the side cealedfroxn'view from the exterior of the bed stead, asclearlyillnstrated in Fig. 2 of. the drawings. This recess l2 extends upward from the lower end of the plate or member 9 and from the lower edge of the side rail, and it terminates short of the upper edge of the same. it also extends from the inner face of to each other for thereeepfastenings for inner face of The side rail is provided at its i rail and con# the side rail to a point adjacent to the outer face thereof, forming an outer upright ilange 13, extending over the adjacent edges of the plates or members 1 and 9. The recess of the side rail alstl forms a projecting top portion 14, which covers the upper ends of the plates or members. The vertical edges or faces of the flanges or portions at the ends of the side rail of the bedstead fit snnglyagainst and are drawn tightly to the corner-posts by the fastenihg devices, and vermin is effectually excluded from the bedstead-joint at those points.
It will be seen that the bedstead-fastener is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it possesses great strength and durability,-and that it is adapted to be readlily applied to the corner-posts and side rails of a bedstead. Also it willl be clear that the bedstead fastener presents tightly fitting metal faces around the interlocking parts and effectually excludes vermin from the same..
Furthermore, it will be apparent that both sections or members are concealed within the end recess of the side rail and that the latter is drawn tightly against the corner-post by the bedstead-fastener. The two upper hook ,shaped tongues form a firm support for-the side rails ofthe bedstead, and the lower tongue maintains the side rails in a perpendicular position and prevents any lateral movement of the saine.
It will be understood that the invention is not restricted to bedsteads, but may be em-- ployed in analogous arrangements for detachably connecting two members or elements.
l. In a device of the class described, the combination with a corner-post, of a side rail provided with an end recess odset from the top and outer face of the side rail, a plate or member secured to and projecting from the face of the post and arranged within the recess of the side rail and provided with'aslot, and a plate or member secured to the side rail in the recess thereof and provided with a tongue for engaging the said slot, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination-with a corner-post, of a sidegrail having an end recess and fitted against the corner-post, said end recess being odset'from the'upper and outer-faces of the side rail, a plate or vmember secured to the face of the post eind projecting beyond the same into the end recess of the s'ide rail and located within the same when the parts are' assembled, and a plate or member secured to the side rail in the end recess thereof and spaced from the adjacent end edges of the same, and fitting lagainst the said plate or memberand provided with means for engaging the same and' for drawing the parts together, whereby the plates or members and the post and side rail will be held firmly in contact with each other,'
ssl
the side rail and extending into the recess,
thereof and spaced. from the adjacent end edges of the side rail and fitting against the said plate or member, said L-shaped plate or member being provided with hook-shaped tongues extending nto the said slots and engaging the inner face of the member' or plate having the slots, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with two members, one of the members provided with a recess odset from the exposed faces thereof, a plate secured to the other member and projecting therefrom and fitting within the said recess and Aprovided with slots, and an L-shaped plate secured to the recessed member and extending into the 'recess thereof and fitting against the said plate, said L-shaped plate provided with hookshaped tongues extending into the said slot, substantially as described.
vIn testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
