BEDSTEAD-FASTENING.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,511, dated September 14,` 1858.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISAAC M. MAY, of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Bedstead-Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2, are side views of my invention connecting together a post and end side rail of a bedstead. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section of ditto taken in the line fr, m, Fig. 2.

Similar letters o f reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

This invention consists in constructing the fastening in such a way as hereinafter fully shown and described, that when it is applied to a bedstead it not only connects the side rails to the posts but the end rails also, and dispenses with the use of mortises and tenons, thereby considerably diminishing the cost of construction of bedsteads and adding to the strength and durability of the same.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.

A, represents a bedstead post. B, an end rail and C, a side rail. D, is an iron plate which is of bent form corresponding to the surfaces of the inner side of the post and rails B, C. This will be understood by referring to Fig. 3, in which it will be seen that the inner part of the post is beveled off at a, forming an angle of about 450 with the end and side rails, and the plate D, has two portions Z), b, at right angles with each other, and two short portions c, c', which project at right angles respectively from the portions Z), o', the portions c, c, being connected by an oblique portion CZ, forming an angle of about 45 with Z), o. This plate D, may be of cast iron, at least that would be the cheapest mode of construction, and equal to any for the desired purpose. The plate D, is firmly screwed to the end of the rail B, and to the post A, screws e, passing through the part cl, into the post A, at a, and screws e', passing through the part b', into the rail B, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The plate D, firmly secures the post A, to the end rail B, without the aid of a inortise and tenon or any other means whatever.

In the portion b, of the plate D, two oblique slots f, f, are made, said slots having their lower ends nearer the post A, than the upper ends as shown clearly in Fig. 2. To the end of the rail C, adjoining the post A, a cast metal plate E, is firmly screwed, and this plate has two pins g, g, with heads projecting from it. The side rail C, is secured to the post- A, by allowing the pins g', g, to pass into the slots f, f, the oblique slots f, as the rail C, is pressed down drawing the post A, toward the end of the rail C, so that it will abut snugly against it. It will be seen therefore from the above de scription that the rails and posts are firmly secured together without tenons and mortises.

The bedstead may be readily put up and taken down and at the same time firmly braced.

It will of course be understood that each post of a bedstead has a similar fastening, the parts b, of the plates D, being necessarily reversed at opposite sides of the bedsteads in order to secure the side rails to the posts.

I do not claim irrespective of construction and the special adaptation herein shown and described, the employment or use of pins fitting in slots for the purpose of securing or connecting together the posts and rails of a bedstead, for various forms of lsjuch device have been used for the purpose,

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

The combination of the plates D, E, secured respectively to the post A, and rails B, C, and provided with the oblique slots f, f, and pins g, g, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
