Description

R. HUBBARD. BEDSTEAD FASTENING.
No! 28,276. Patented May: 15, 1860.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD HUBBARD, OF MILTON, INDIANA.
BEDSTEAD-FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,276, dated May 15, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD HUBBARD, of Milton, Wayne county, Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bedstead-Fastenings; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification.
The subject of my said improvement is a combination of dovetail mortises and tenons with metallic linings and casings of peculiar construction.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of a post and part of a rail of a bedstead embodying my improvement.
A represents a post and B a side or end rail. Dovetail mortises a are out in the outer vertical corners of the posts to receive the rail tenons 7). These mortises are lined with closely fitting metallic linings C driven tightly into the post. The ends of the rails are tenoned and otherwise suitably cut and bored to receive the metallic casin s D which are so constructed that portions 0? them may extend into the large portions of the rails and terminate in enlarged cylindrical ends (Z (Z. By means of the enlarged portions cl d the casings when driven on to the rail are very effectively, closely and permanently secured thereto. The casings D are fitted to slide snugly into and bind within the linings C.
Several obvious advantages are incident to this arrangement for example. The rail being inserted laterally into the post, such a bedstead can be put up in any room which will hold the erected bedstead. The wood work is adapted to receive the irons by a few simple and expeditious movements of a tenon saw and a center bit. No screws or pins are necessary. The strain of the bed cord acts to draw the fastening more firmly into position. hen used with slats the mortise may open on the inner side of the post.
I claim as new and of my invention herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent The described combination of the dovetail mortise a, dovetail tenon b metallic lining C and metallic casing B formed with cylindrical ends (Z, the whole being constructed arranged and operating in the manner and for the purposes explained.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
RICHARD HUBBARD. lVitnesses GEO. H. KNIGHT, Jos. SHIssLER.
