S. E. MOORE.
TUB FASTENER. No. 351,278. Patented Oct. 19, 1886.
WITNESSES INVENTOR 7 d7ML A4 ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLON E. MOORE, OF S\VANTON, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE W.
' SQUIRES, OF SAME PLACE.
.TUB-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,278, dated October 19, 1886.
Serial No. 212,935. (No model.)
,To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SoLoN E. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Swanton, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tub-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a-perspective view. Fig. 2 is a section through one of the fasteners. Fig. 3 is a bottom view, and shows one end with the corners turned and the other flat as before turning. Fig. 4. is an end view. Fig. 5 is a side View of the nail or tack.
My invention relates to cover-fasteners for shipping-tubs, shippingbuckets, and the like; and it consists of a sheet-metal strip having its corners turned down at right angles to the body of the strip, and provided near each end with a headed tack or nail secured in a seat in said sheet-metal strip to form parts of the cover-fastener, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
This class of fasteners as heretofore con structed have proved objectionable on account of the corners turning up and presenting cutting-edges, which were liable to cut the hands of the person handling the package on which such fasteners have been used. The object of my improvement, in addition to removing the danger from being cut by such upturned corners, is to utilize said corners by turning them down or toward the package and driving said turned corners into the material of the body and cover of the package, thereby causing said driven corners to serve as or have the effect of additional tacks or nails, as the case may be.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates astri p of sheet metal such as tin, sheet'iron, or the likewhieh is provided near each end with a nail or tack, B, said nail or tack being seated in holes 0, punched through the material of the strip in such a manner as to leave a projecting broken or rough edge around the hole on the side of the strip opposite to that at which the punch enters. I provide the tack or nail with a notch, D, made transversely of the body of the tack or nail, immediately under the head of the tack or nail, as the case may be, into which the material of the strip enters and holds the tack or nail in place, so that the fastener is ready to be applied to the tub or other package at any time after the fastener has been completed. One tack or nail near each end of the fasteningstrip is usually sufficient; but Imay, and some times do, use two tacks or nails near each end in addition to the turneddown corners.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A cover-fastener for shipping-tubs and the like, comprising a sheet-metal strip having turned-down corners, and securing tacks or nails seated in holes near the endsof said strips, substantially as specified.
2. In a cover-fastener, the sheet metal strip provided with tacks or nails and with the turned-down corners, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SOLON E. MOORE.
