Description

UNITED STATES Priceo PATENT BEDSTEAD.
.ePncIr'roA'rIoN forming part of Letters Patent No.851,o55, dated October 19. 1886- Applieation filed May 26, 1886. Serial No. 203,301.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, STEPHEN M. IIUBBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carland, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful lmprovernents in Bedsteads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exaet description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, whieh form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to bedsteads provided with means for holding bedclothes; and it ainis particularly to improve and simplify such means and to devise a construction which shall be compact in arrangenient, econoniioal in cost, easy to manage, and durable and effieient 111 US8.
Vith these ends in .view I have devised the simple and novel construction which I will now describe, referring by letter to the annexed drawings, in which- Fignre 1 is a plan view of the foot portion of the bed, showing` my improvenients in position. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 3 is a side view with the nearer rail renioved. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the plate in which the fastener-bar is journaled.
The bedstead is of ordinary construction and eomprises the foot-board A and side rails, A', provided with the usual slats, A2. The fastening device consists of the fiat bar B, journaled at one edge in the side rails or plates, O, fastened thereto on the inner sides, a bellcrank lever, D, a hand-lever, E, and notched plate or bar F, and the rod G, connecting the hell-Crank and hand-levers.
The fastening-bar B is provided with journals at a distance from its 'forward edge, which are inserted in one of a series of eorresponding openings, c, forined in the sides of the rails, or, better still, the plates O, fastened thereto. By adjusting the bar in any one set of openings the edge may be brought closer to or farther from the foot of the bed, according to the bull: of clothing to be clamped between it and the strip a on the foot-board of the bedstead.
The hand-level' F is pivoted to the under (No model.)
side of one of the slats and extends within convenient reach of one side of the bed, and when adjusted to any desired position is held fast by being seated in one of the notches in the bar F. The bell-crank D is secured at one end to the bar, preferably about midway between the ends. The other end extends downward and is connected to the inner end of the hand-levelj by the link or bar G.
From the foregoing description and the annexed drawings the operation of the device is readil y apparent. Iyinoving the lever E the fastening-bar is turned about its journals, thus varying the distance between its clampingedge and the foot-board of the bed or the strip thereon. The bedclothes are clainped between the fastening--bar and the foot-board, and are held in place thereby.
l'laving thus described my invention, what I claini, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. rlhe combination, with the bcdstead and a strip, of a fastening-bar eccentrically journaled at its ends between the side rails near said strip, and means for actuating said bar to clanip the bedclothes between it and the strip,l substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the side rails of a bedstead having a series of corresponding openings on the inner sides, of a fastening-bar journaled between the rails in a eoi'ijesponding pair of openings, and means for actuating said bar, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the side rails of a bedstead, of plates having a series of coincident openings fastened to the inner sides of the rails, the clamping-bar journaled between the rails in a corresponding pair of openings in the plates, and means for actuating said bar, substantially as described.
4:. In a bedstead, the combination of the fastening-bar journaled between the side rails, a lever depending therefroxn, a hand-level' pivoted to one of the slats, a notched bar, and a rod connecting the ends of the two levers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a bedstead, the combination of the foot-board having a strip fastened thereon, a
ICO
fastening-barjournaled between the side rails In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in and acting in opposition to the strip, a bellpresence of two Witnesses. Crank level' depending from the bar, a handlever pvoted to one of the slatsand extending W STEPHEN M' HUBBELL' 5 within convenient reach, a notehe bar, and a Witl'lesses:
link conneetng the two levers, substantially CHAUNCY BENEDICT,
as shown, and for the purposes deseribed. HENRY O. BINGER.
