particularly designed to be secured to bedsteads and comprising an adjustable rest adapted to support the head, back and shoulders of an occupant of the bed,'

and conveniently adjustable to effect variation in its height according to the desires of such occupant.

The invention comprehends not only a novel construction of the rest but peculiar and advantageous means for detaclrably securing the rest to the bedstead, as well as special operating mechanisms adapted for ready operation to facilitate adjustment of the device.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

Specifically describing the invention, the rest proper consists mainly of opposing sides 1 adjustably connected together by means of a top consisting of a bar or rod 2. The opposing ends of the top 2 of the rest may be received in lateral tubular extensions 3 of the sides 1, in order to afford a connection admitting of lateral adjustment of the sides 1 relative to one another, thereby admitting of application of the rest to bed steads of different widths or sizes. The bedstead parts shown consist of the head 4 and the side rails 5, said parts being of any conventional construction, such as are now commonly in use. Near the head 4 of the bedstead oppositely arranged brackets 6 are attached to the side rails 5. Each of the brackets 6 is composed of a body having clamp screws 7 at opposite ends which are adapted to directly engage the side rails 5 of the bedstead in order to attach the bracket thereto. The sides 1 of the rest are pivoted to the brackets 6, as shown at 8 and the lower extremity of each side is formed with an enlargement having segment teeth 9 adapted to be engaged by the latch rod 10, one of which is slidably mounted for movement longitudinally of each bracket 6, being guided in such move ment by loops or small guide members 1]. projecting outwardly from and preferably integrally formed with the bracket. Intermediate of its end, the latch rod 10 engaged from the teeth 9 of the sides 1 of the rest.

has an adjustable set collar 12 mounted thereon, and a coiled spring 13 is interposed between the set collar and one of the adjacent guide members 11, said spring normally tending to force the latch rod 10 about which it isarranged, into engagement with the segment teeth 9 of the adjacent side 1 of the rest.

The arrangement of the segment teeth 9 is such that the rest may be locked in any adjusted position desired for all practical purposes, this being a very desirable feature of the invention. The latch rods 6 are connected at the rear or outermost ends thereof by pivot connections 14 with short links or rods 15, the latter having connection with bell crank levers 16 which are attached to a transverse shaft 17 located at the rear of the head 4 of the bed, said shaft 17 being mounted in suitable brackets 18 attached to opposite sides of the head 4. One of the bell crank levers 16 is connected by a rod 19 with a small hand lever 20 which is pivoted to a detachable bracket 21 arranged at the upper end portion of one side of the head 4 of the bedstead. Should it be desired two of the hand levers 16, which are of somewhat bell crank form, may be used, one being located at opposite sides of the head 4, but one of the hand levers is sufiicient to cause simultaneous actuation of the latch rods 10 being operatively connected with both of said rods.

It is contemplated by the present invention to provide means for normally tending to force the rest, above described, upwardly such means being comprehended in the use of coiled springs 22 which are connected at one end with extensions 23 at the lower ends of the sides 1 of the rest, the opposite ends of the springs 22 being connected with opposite sides of the head 4 of the bedstead by any suitable attaching means, indicated at 24. It-is, therefore, only necessary to force the rest downwardly in securing a lower adjustment thereof, after the hand lever or levers have been operated. The springs 22 will force the rest upwardly in the event it is desired to adjust the same to a higher position, when the latch rods 10 have been dis- The set collars 12 may be adjusted to vary the tension of the spring cooperating with the latch rods 10 in an evident manner.

From the foregoing, it will be observed that the construction of the rest as herein described, is very simple, is applicable as an attachment to all types of bedsteads at present most common in use, and is very advantageous in providing a rest for the head, back and shoulders of an occupant or occupants of a bed.

The attachment is adjustable so as to be fitted to bedsteads of different widths. The bar or rod 2 telescoping with the parts 3 may be secured by any suitable means and are shown most clearly in Fig. 4, said means consisting of machine screws passed through openings near the ends of the parts 3 and adapted to enter one of a series of openings in the rod or bar 2. In order to support the mattress, pillows, or like bedding, the rest Will be provided with supporting strips either of wire, rods, belting or fabric the latter being either of textile or Wire, said supporting means being attached to the sides 1 and the cross bar of the attchment in any convenient and substantial Way.

It will be observed that positive locking means are provided for each side of the rest, thereby holding the same firmly in any adjusted position and preventing sagging at one end or the other which would be the case if locking means were provided at one side only of the attachment. The provision of the hand lever 20 and intermediate connecting means between it and the levers 16 admit of simultaneous operation of the locking means at each side of the bed and attachment so that adjustment of the rest may be effected from one point and after the rest has been adjusted at both sides,

with the result that it will not sag at either end when subjected to superposed pressure.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
