FREDERICK B. HEMINGVAY, OF CLINTON, IOVA, ASSICNCR TO HEM TNCVAY & KELLY, CF SAME PLACE.
BED-LOUNGE.
SFECIFJCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,513, dated Augll' 7. 1833- Application filed May 19, 1888.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnnnnioii B. HnMiNa WAY, a. citizen ofthe United States ofAmerica, residing at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Lounges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a bed-lounge having aslotted wire-web bottoni extending over the entire intermediate space of the-frames and provided with folding head-rests having their legs inserted through the slots of the web and pivoted in position to be folded inward with the lounge-frames and to be opened outward beyond the ends of the frames, all as hereinafter fully set forth and as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of my improved bed-lounge opened 1n position for use as a bed, with the cloth covering broken away, showing the wire web and spiral springs. Fig. 2 is aside elevation with a portion of the back broken away.V Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line x fr of Fig. 1, looking toward and showing the back in elevation. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the lounge folded together at line y 3/ of Fig. 3, looking toward the head of the lounge.
A designates the main frame, and A the folding frame, hinged at c c to the main frame.
B designates a wire web which is stretched tightly and attached in its tightly-stretched state at both ends and both sides directly to the inner edges of the frames A A.
C designates spiral springs placed and suitably supported in position to form yielding supports to the wire web when used as a spring bed-bottom. It will be seen that the wire web extends from side to side and from end to end of the said frames, covering the entire intermediate space, and that there are no intermediate rails or wooden supports to the wire web, it being supported only loy its own tension and by the said spiral springs, forming thus a continuous yielding spring bed-bottom from end to end as well as from side to side of the ranes when opened in position for use as a The forward portion of the wire web is pro- Serial No. 274.431. (No model.)
vided with the slots I) to receive the legs ofthe headrest or pillow-supportframes cc,as shown in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings. Each of these pillowsupport frames is formed of one rod, thclcgs of which frames are inserted through the slots in the wire web, and their lower ends are .bent and inserted through staples or eyes d, attached to the frames. The said slots are made long enoughV to allow the pillowsupport frames to be folded inward and to be opened outward 6o and extended beyond the ends of the loungeframes, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawlngs.
lhe seat portion of the lounge is provided with the spiral springs D,which are secured in place, and the seat E and the lounge-back F are upholstered in any suitable manner. lt is evident that the wire-web bed B may be covered with any suitable material, or it may be used without any covering by placing upon it 7o when opened for use as a bed an ordinary mattress, or a mattress provided expressly for it, to be placed upon it when in use and removed when the lounge-frames are to be folded together for use merely as a lounge. Iprefer, however, to provide the wire web with a covering of cotton-batting, f, placed evenly and smoothly over the wire web in sufficient thickness to form a comfortable bed, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. The cotton- 8o batting is then covered with. suitable ticking,
h, which is tackedto the frame and tufted to the batting in the usual manner.
The folding frame of the lounge is provided with the supporting-feet m n and spring-hook 8 5 S, which hook is adapted to catch in a keeper, S', fastened to the frame A,for the purpose of holding the lounge-seat in the folded position. These supporting-legs and hooking devices are constructed in the usual manner.
The ticking or cloth covering h is provided with pockets to receive and entirely inclose the pillow-support frames c, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
The pivots and pivoted ends of the legs of head-rests located beyond and above the edges of the wire web or other fabric of a bedlounge are necessarily exposed to contact with and are thus liable to injure the mattress and other bedding. By means of the elongated Ico slots in the wire web Iam enabled to place the pivoted ends of the legs of thehead-rests under a wire web Awhich is extended over the entire intermediate space between the rails of the lounge-frames, thus removing the said pivoted ends oi' the legs entirely beyond the liability of Contact with and injury to the bedding, and by means ol' the said slots I am enabled to employ two separate head-rests in combination with sneh extended wire webbing, eaeh ol` said head-rests being' adapted to be readily folded inward wilh the lounge-frames and to be opened outward in position for use, as herein set forth. The said legs being pivoted in the required positions, the head-rests,when opened ontwnrlhexleml beyond the ends of the loungel'rames, and thus .form an extension of the bedlounge7 enabling the lounge-frames to be eurtailed correspondingly in length.
\\"hen the bed-lounge is to be folded together, the supports c are folded inward, as shown in llig. 3 of the drawings.
VWhnt I claim as new is-m l. .In a bed-lounge, the wire web B,prorided with the elongated slots b and extended over the entire intermediate space between the outer sides and ends of the lounge frames, and fastened in a tightly-stretched state to the lounge-frames, in combination with the two separate pillow-support frames c, having their legs inserted through the slots and pivotally eonneeted with the lounge-frames below the wire web, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a bed-lounge, the wire web B, provided with the elongated slots b and extended over the entire intermediate space between the outer sides and ends of the lounge-frames, and fastened in a tightly-stretched state to the frames, in combination with the two separate pillow-support frames, c, having their legs inserted through the slots and pivot-ally con neeted with the frames below the wire web in position lor their forward portions to extend beyond the loLinge-frames,substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signatni'e in presence 0I" two witnesses.
FREDERICK Il. IIEMINGXVAY.
