Description

' B. SHUNK.
HAT COVER AND NB K SHIELD. No. 350,398. Patented Oct. 5, 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
BENJAMIN SHUNK, OF'JAOKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
HAT-COVER AND NECK-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,398, dated Octobcr 5, 1886.
Application filed July 6, 1886. Serial No. 207,197. (No model To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SHUNK, a citizen of the United'States, and a resident of Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Hat-Covers and Neck- Shields and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat provided with my improved cover and neckshield. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cover and shield removed from the hat.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. V v Myinvention has relation to covers for hats or caps having a shield for protecting the back of the neck; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a cover and shield having an inner lining of,
asbestus, rendering the cover nearly impermeable to the rays of the sun, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the hat, and B indicates the cover, which is shaped to fit freely upon the hat or cap, and this cover consists of an outer layer, 0, of any suitable light textile fabric, an inner layer, 1), of a similar material, and an intermediate layer, E, of asbestus, preferably in the form of felt, cloth, or flexible board. A
neck-shield, F, composed of the same ma'erials, is suspended from the rear portion of the cover by means of hooks and eyes G, and this shield will protect the back of the neck of the person wearing the cover and shield when being exposed to the heat of the sun.
I have found by experiments that the different products of asbestus, which maybe used as this liningviz.,, asbestus felt, asbestus cloth, or asbestus boardof different thicknesses and stiffness, will be impenetrable for the rays of the sun, objects being covered with these materials being held at a lower temperature when exposed to the rays of the sun than when covered by any other materials, and I therefore employ these asbestus products for lining the covers for hats or caps and for lining the neck-shields, which will be found very useful when a person is working in the sun and liable to stoop, exposing the back of the head and neck to the sun.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A covering for head-wear consisting of an inner and an outer layer of textile fabric and an intermediate layer of asbestus, in combination with a neck-shield composed of a like material.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
BENJAMIN SHUNK.
