LETTER-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,041, dated September 28, 1886.
Application tiled February 4, 1886. Serial No. 190,944.
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, AENER S. Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county ofDes Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Letter-Boxes, oi' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in letter-boxes in which the bottom and a front l'lap are joined at right angles in one piece and hinged to the box, and the object ol' my invention is to provide a letter-box for private use, simple in construction and easily examined and empt-ied. I accomplish this by the device hereinafter described, and illust-rated in the accompanying drawing, in which similar letters refer to similar parts.
In the drawing, Ais the box of any suitable material, preferably ot' iron, furnished with a perforated top, T, to admit letters, papers, and other maihmatter.
L is a lid attached by any suitable hinge or similar device to the top or back of the box, so as to t close over the top T.
B is a combined bottom and front liap solidly fastened together at right angles, and provided with lugs b Zi, which lugs freely move in perforations c c in the box A, so as to form a hinge. B also is provided with a hasp, d, or any other suitable fastening device, which fits over a staple, d', in box A, and thus admits of being fastened and locked. The combined bot- (No model.)
The operation of my invention is :is follows:
The mail-matter is putinto the box A through the perforated top T by lifting lid L. ',Ilf, now, the box is to be emptied of its contents, the front linp ol' B is opened and pressed down, whereby the bottom will be lifted upward and forward, thus bringing any mail-matter con-- tained in the box toward the front opening', where it can easily be taken out.
The object of having ridge X is to prevent the sliding ol' the mail-matter out ol' the box back of the movable bottom.
By means of window XV it can be easily seen whether mailniatter is contained in the box or not.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a letter-box provided with a perforated top and a lid, of a combined bottom and front iiap, B, arranged at right angies, said Hap being provided at its angle with lugs b, which bear in the perforations c to forni hinges, and n ridge or stop, X, substantially as described.
