DRAWER FOR DRAWING-PAPER AND DOCUMENTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,061,dated September 8, 1885.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER RUssELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hot Springs, in the county of Garland and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drawers for Holding Writing-Paper, &c., of which the following is a description.

This invention relates to that class of devices which are used to facilitate the examination of the contents of drawers; and it has for its object to provide means whereby drawings and other papers contained in drawers made for the purpose may be readily uncovered and held in position for examination.

To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a drawer for holding papers, hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet, showing one drawer according to my invention partly drawn out and open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a drawer open, and Fig. 3 is a side view of a drawer closed.

A represents a cabinet or case for containing drawers. This may be united to be'located against the wallsof a room; or it may be a portable writing-desk or any other suitable receptacle for drawers.

B represents the sides of a drawer, and F the bottom thereof, firmly secured together, as usual, and fitted to slide into the case A.

(J is the front end of the drawer, rigidly joined to a portion, G, of the bottom, forming a door, hinged at the rear edge of the portion G to the drawer to swing forward and downward, whereby the front end of the drawer is opened.

D is a lid hinged upon the sides, and covering the forward end of the drawer. This lid is provided with a transverse groove, E,

in its under side, near the front edge, adapted to receive the upper edge of the front end, 0, when the drawer is closed, thereby serving as a hook to hold the front end in its normal position.

Upon pulling out the drawer and raising the lid the front end swings down, leaving the front end of the paper in the drawer projecting forward of the remaining drawer-bottom, so that the paper may be grasped in bulk by the hand and be lifted out bodily without the trouble consequent to a drawer hook than the lid D might be used to hold the front end closed. The bottom portion,

G,is provided with a shoulder-joint at the hinge to rest on a portion of the drawer-bot tom to hold the door 0 G in position to serve as a paper-rest, as shown in Fig. 2.

I am aware that file-boxes have been shown in which the front end is hinged directly to the front end of a'full-length bottom, and a' portion of the cover shuts down over the upper edge of the said front end to hold the same closed, and I do not claim that as my invention.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the drawer B F, having an open forward end, and the forward portion of its bottom open,,a forward end, 0, and a portion of a bottom, G, hinged at the rear edge of the latter to the drawer,

'and a lid, D, hinged at its rear edge to the top of the drawer and grooved at E, to receive the upper edge of the front 0, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination of a drawer .open at its forward end and the adjacent portion of its bottom, a door fitting said open end and bottom, hinged at its rear edge to the said bottom and provided with a shoulder to engage the bottom at a given angle, and a lid hinged to the top of the drawer at its rear edge, substantially as shown and described,

whereby the door may serve to support papers standing endwise thereon, and the lid may at the same time serve as a back rest for the said papers, as set forth.
