No. 846,257. Patented July 27', 1886.
WITNESSES: M/VE/l/TOR %& y' lmlz- LUCIEN BAEH8 DAVID KRAEMER WQWMW' BY N. PEYERS Pholo-Umagnpher. wmin m. 0.0.
UNITED STATES PATENT O EIQE.
LUCIEL BAER AND DAVID KRAEMER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WALL-PAPER AND OTHER FABRIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,257, dated July 27, 1286.
Application filed June 10,1886. Serial No. 204,691.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LUCIEN BAER and DAVID KRAEMER, citizens of theUnited States, and residents of New York, in the county of New York and State-of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vall Papers or other Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to produce a new fabricsuch as wall-paper or paper-hang ings-in imitation ofvelvet or flock, in a cheap and effective manner; and it consists, essentially, in the employment of dried wood pulp to form ornamental design or designs on the Web of paper, as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a cross-section of a piece of paper ornamented according to ourinvention. Fig. 2 represents a face view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter a designates the web, I) the groundcolor thereof, cthe size upon the said ground color, and cl the design, which is composed of dyed wood pulp.
In carrying out our invention we take a W( b of papersuch as is ordinarily used for wallpaperor paper-hangings-androlororstainthe race thereof in any usual or suitable manner. We then coat this web upon the colored surface, after the color has dried, with size, varnish, or any other suitable adhesive substance, and while the adhesive substance is in a moist state we ornament the web, in whole or in part, by hand or machine, with suitable design or designs composed of dried wood pulp colored in any suitable way by means of aniline dyes,
(Specimens) so that the wood pulp is firmly cemented to the paper by means of the adhesive substance by drumming or otherwise, or in any of the Well-known methods employed in the mannfacture of wall-paper, as may be found most convenient.
A suitable machine may be used to apply the wood pulp to the paper, or it may be applied by hand by means of a brush or otherwise.
NVe are aware that wall-paper, as well as oilcloth, have heretofore been ornamented with designs composed of sawdust and other substancessuch as ground glass and sandand we do not claim such as our invention, the essential feature of which is the employment of dried wood pulp as a substitute for flock, thereby producing a perfect imitation of flock, both in touch and appearance, at a comparatively low cost, and, in distinction from sawdust, producing a smooth surface, and one which is adapted to adhere to the paper in a superior manner.
\iVhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a fabricsuch as wallpaper or paper-hangingshaving ornamental design or designs formed thereon, in imitation of velvet or flock,by means of wood pulp in a dried state, substantially as herein described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York.
