Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM SOGHEFSKY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DECORATING WALL-HANGINGS AND OTHER FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,409, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed April 23, 1885. (Specimens) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM SooIIEFsKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful I mprovements in Decorating Wall-Hangings and other Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a decorated fabric, which consists of a stiffened and embossed textile material-such as muslin, cloth, or silkcoated with a solution of shellac, and finally painted with suitable coloring-matters.
In carrying out my invention I take a textile inaterialsuch as muslin-and treat the same with a suitable sizing-such, for instance, as a solution of isinglass or gelatine --and then 1 expose the same to the action of embossing'dies or rollers. The face of the embossed fabric is then coated with a suitable liquid-such, for instance, as a solution of schellac for the pun pose of producing a smooth surface, and this surface is finally painted with suitable coloring-matters. For thispurpose I can use oil colors, or alcoholic colors, or both combined. In some instances watercolors may be used.
The textile fabric which I use may be one, two, or three ply, according to the purpose for which the decorated fabric is to be used, and by following the abovedescribed process I am enabled to producewalthangings, coverings for furniture, and linings for carriages which have a close resemblance to leather, and which can be furnished at a greatly-reduced price as compared with the cost of similar articles made from leather.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a decorated fabric composed of a stiffened and embossed 4o textile 1naterialsucl1 as muslincoated with a suitable liquid-such as a solution of shellacand finally painted with suitable color- I ing-matters.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 45 my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM SOUHEFSKY.
