Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'WILLIAM SOOHEFSKY, on NEW YORK, n. Y.
DECORATED FABRIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 849,238, dated September 14, 1886.
Application filed May 27, 1886. Serial No. 203,467. lSpecimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SocIIEFsKY, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, 5 have invented new and useful Improvements in Decorated Fabrics, of whichthe following is a specification.
In Letters Patent No. 320,409, granted to me June 16, 1885, I have described a decorated 1o fabric composed of a stiffened and embossed textile material, such as muslin coated with a suitable liquidsuch as a solution of shellac and finally painted with suitable coloring-matters. Since that time I. have found that by I 5 substituting embroidered work for the painting new and striking effects can be produced. My present invention therefore consists in a decorated fabric composed of a stiffened and embossed material, such as muslin or leather, 2: and decorated by an embroidery. If desired, some portions of the material may be decorated by embroiderin and other p ortions by painting, and if the embossed work contains the repre sentation of human or animal faces, such "faces 25 are provided with artificial eyes.
' In carrying out my invention, I take muslin or any other textile fabric, which is stiffened by means of any suitable backing, or I can take leather, with or without such backing, and expose the same to the action of embossing dies or rollers. The embossed fabric is further decorated by embroidering either the whole surface or such parts thereof as may be most desirable; or I decorate portions of the em- 3 5 bossed surface by embroidering and other portions by painting. In such cases where portions of the embossed surface represent the heads or faces of human beings or of animals, a good effect is produced if, in addition to the decorations produced byembroideringas above stated, the embossed laces are, provided with artificial eyes.
The process of cmbroidering on the embossed surface of the fabric can be effected byhand or by suitable implements or machines.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a decorated fabric composed of a stiffened material, such as leather or muslin, embossed and 50 decorated with embroidery, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a decorated fabric composed of an embossed and stiffened material, such as muslin or leather, 55 and decorated with embroidery and painting, substantially as described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a decorated fabric composed of an embossed ma terial, such as stiffened muslin or leather, 6c decorated with embroidery and the representation of human or animal faces, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two sub- 6 5 scribing witnesses.
