Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ALFRED TURNER, OF WEST GORTON, NEAR MANCHESTER, COUNTY OF LANGASTER,'ENGLAND.
MANUFACTURE OF MATERIAL FOR COVERING AND DECORATING WALLS AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
{SPECIFICATION iorming part of Letters Patent No.324,343, dated August 11, 1885.
Application filed April 8, 1885. (No specimens.) Patented in England February 19, 1885, No.2,304.
1'0 all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known thatv I, J AMES ALFRED TUR- NER, a citizen of England, residing at West Gorton, near Manchester, in the county of 5 Lancaster, England, have invented a new and useful Manufacture of,-.Material for Covering and Decorating Walls and for other Purposes, (for which I have made application for a patent in Great Britain, No. 2,304, dated Febru- IO ary 19, 1885,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel material for covering and decorating walls and for other purposes; and it consists in an ornamented woven fabric, to which a backing of paper or other material is secured through the medium of water-proof cement such as vegetable pitchin contradistinction to fixing a paper back to velveteen by an aqueous paste.
In carrying out my invention I select a woven fabric having an embossed, figured, or other ornamented surface, and to such fabric I secure a backing of paper or other material 2 through the medium of a water-proof cement preferably composed of the vegetable pitches, and spread over the surface of the material by doctors. wall in the usual manner, so that the orna- 0 mented fabric constitutes the visible surface.
The water-proof nature of the cement is very important in that it prevents the moisture of the paste or wall from affecting the ornamented fabric.
If the material is to be applied by nailing or otherwise'than by pasting, I make the backing of woven fabric instead of paper; but in all cases I fix the backing to the ornamented fabric by the water-proof cement.
I may ornament the woven backing, so that if the material is used for curtains or other loose. hangings it will have both sides ornamented.
This backing can be pasted to a I am aware that a paper backing has been secured to a woven fabric by means of an 5 aqueous paste, as in Patent No. 243,193; but my invention differs therefrom in uniting a backing to an ornamented woven fabric by means of a water-proof cement, which is very important for the following reasons:v First, in applying an aqueous paste to a textile fabric such as I contemplate using-namely, delicately-finished cretonnesthe moisture would be certain to strike through the fabric and make it spotty, thereby spoiling its appearance, which is not the case when awater-proof cement is employed, as this is of such consistency that it will not strike through; secondly, in employing an aqueous paste this would have the opposite effect on the paper backing and the fabric-the latterwould shrink and the former would expand, so that on drying the combined materials would twist out of shape, preventing their even application to wall-surfaces; thirdly, by using aqueous paste the damp would still be able to strike through the paper into the fabric from the walls, whereas with the water-proof cement this is effectually prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A covering for walls and other purposes, consisting of an ornamented woven fabric and a backing of paper or its equivalent secured thereto by water-proof cement of the character set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of March,
JAMES A. TURNER.
