Description

NIT-ED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ANNA M. KNOOP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
-oRooI-.l ET HAT, CAP, sw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,151, dated August 23, 1881.
Application filed April 20, 1851. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANNA M. KNooP, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and Improved Crochet Goods, of which the following is a specification.
The object ot' my invention is to provide new and improved crochet goods, which can be used as hatframes, book-satchels, sewingbaskets, &c.
The invention consists in an article ofcrochetwork which is stiffened by means otl glue, gelatine, or similar substance, is then dried on a mold, which gives it the desired form, and is then protected with a suitable varnish.
In the accompanying drawing a perspective view of a hat-frame made of improved crochet goods is shown.
A crocheted article is made of cotton or other thread in the ordinary manner and ot' any desiredpattcrn, this article being formed according to the purpose for which it is to be usedfor instance, as a hat-frame, a Satchel for schoolbooks, sewing-basket, card-basket, Sto. This crocheted articleis then dyed any desired color, preferably yellow, to resemble straw. The article is then immersed in or impregnated with dissolyged glue, gelatine, starch, or suitable stitfening material. The'crocheted glued article is then placed on a mold, and as this glue or stiftening material dries and hardens it causes the crocheted article to assume and retain the shape of the mold. The dried article is then varnished with shellac or other suitable varnish, to prevent moisture from acting upon the stiening material. If the crocheted article is to be used as a hat-frame it is attached to a Wire frame, provided with a lining, Src.; and if it is to be used as a school-hook satchel or basket it is trimmed with ribbons and provided with handles in the ordinary manner.
In defining myinvention more clearlyI would state that I am aware that close fabrics and hatbodies have been made water-proof' by means of a varnish, and I do not claim this broadly. I do not know, however, that crochetwork has ever been utilized for hats and other articles, as described; and the sti'ening and varnishing have a special value in this case. They do not serve to make a close, tight, and water-proof surface, as has been heretofore done; but the stitfening serves to cement and hold the figures of the crochet-work in their proper symmetrical relation to eachother, so as to preserve always the shape and beauty ot' the iigures, while the varnish maintains this relation and prevents the stiiening from softening and deteriorating by absorbed moisture.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A hat or its equivalent, as described, made ,of open crochet figures maintained in symmetrical relation by a stit't'ening and protected by a superficial coat of varnish, as and for the purpose described.
ANNA M. KNOOP.
