PATENT OEErcE.
, THOMAS w. REAGEER, 0E NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN lTHE ORNAMENTATION 0F HAI-TIPS AND LININGS.
Speeiiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,534, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. BRAOHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamenting Hat-Tips and Linings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, which drawing consists of one figure, and represents a hat-tip, which illustrates my invention.
My invention relates to hat-tips or-linin gs for hats and caps; and consists in protecting the letters andornaments, and. other parts of the surface thereof which are in metal leaf, or other material, from becoming tarnished by the action of the atmosphere or gases. This result is aecoinplishedlwithout injury to the delicate fabric ofthe tip or lining.
The drawing represents a hat-tip, A, of satin mounted with paper B, on which are printed letters and ornaments in silver-leaf.
Such letters and ornaments are very liable to become tarnished from the action of the atmosphere and injurious gases in the atmosphere; and the object of myinvention is to protect the metal-leaf letters and ornaments from such injury, and keep them bright and of the natural appearance.`
In carrying out my invention I combine with the tip or lining, after the letters `and ornaments have been produced thereon, a coating of gelatine or other solution of such a character aswill not soil or discolor the fabric of which the tip or lining is composed. In the present example of my invention the right-hand side of the tip is protected according to my invention, whereby the letters, ornaments, and border, in leaf, on that side to theA right of the line indicated by the letters x x are preserved from the injurious influences above mentioned, so as to retain their natural appearance and color, without producing anyinjur f to the fab ric or surface of the tip on which the letters and ornaments are made.
In order to showmy invention by means of contrast with the common inode of ornamenting tips and linings, I have left that portion of the tip shown in the drawing which is to the left of the line, indicated by the letters x w, unprotected, so as to show the result of the exposure of the leaf to the atmosphere, the letters and ornaments on that portion being tarnished and discolored from such exposure.
The protecting material which I employ to keep the tipcfrom being tarnished and discolored consists-of a solution of gelatine, or any other solution of acolorless and transparent nature, which will not soil, discolor, or injure the tip or lining. Ihave also used water-glass for this purpose. In carrying out 4my invention I apply the solution to that part ofthe tip or lining which contains the letters and ornaments, at'ter such letters and ornaments are produced thereon, and allow the same to dry.
My invention is applicable to tips or linings which have the letters and ornaments produced or printed directly upon the surface of the fabric, as well as to tips which have paper or other material superimposed upon the surface of the fabric to receive the letters or ornaments.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, la tip or lining for hats and caps, provided with letters, ornaments, Sac., as described, which are coated with a transparent protecting solution of gelatine or water-glass, all as set forth, for the purpose specified.
This. specification signed by me this 7th day of February, 1872.
