G, P. SHEARER ORNAMENT AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME Fil-ed July 11, 1925 Patented Feb. 2, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GROVER P. SHEARER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 A. L. RANDALL CO., OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ORNAMENT AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME.
Application led July 11, 1925. Serial No. 42,907.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnovnn P. SHEARER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chica-go, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornaments and Methods of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ornaments particularly adapted though not necessarily limited in its use for attachment to basket covers, box covers, wreaths and the like, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide .an improved ornament which will be of an artistic appearance and of a substantial construction.
A further object is to provide an improved method for preparing a flexible strip or sheet to form the ornament and to impart rigidity and stiffness thereto when formed.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts and in substantially the method hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cover for a. box or a basket having an ornament attached thereto constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention.
Figure 2 is a view of a portion of a strip used in the formation of the ornament.
In carrying this invention into operation the ornament is formed of flexible material 10, preferably in the form of a strip or ribbon such as ordinary gummed tape, heavy paper or any other suitable fabric of the desired weight and weave.
If the strip or piece of material employed in the formation of the article is sized the strip is immersed in water to soften the same to render it pliable and easy to manipulate.
The material thus softened is then shaped to form a bow or any other ornament and may be then applied to a suitable support such as a cover l2, which is to be decorated and is fastened thereto in any suitable manner.
The support may also have secured thereto in any suitable manner other ornaments 13,
which co-operate with the ornament 11 to render -a pleasing appearance to the article or to decorate the same.
The .support together with the bow or ornament 11 and the ornaments 13 are then immersed in a strong sizing solution such as glue or the like, after which it is allowed to dry.
Vater proofing material is theny applied to the ornaments in any suitable manner either by a dipping or spraying process, after which the article and the support therefor are .allowed to dry. Coloring material may then be applied to the ornament.
If desired after the ribbon or strip has been shaped intoI the ornament a coating of any suitable composition may be added which may be of any desired thickness to cause the same to .appear as though it is constructed of heavy material, and the o-rnament may then be applied to the support.
Obviously the coating may be of any desired thickness.
With this improved construction it will be manifest that, as illustrated in the present invention, there will be produced a cover for a basket or box having an ornament applied thereto which will not only be of a pleasing appearance, but will be of a stout and comparatively rigid construction, which will cause the ornament to maintain its shape and prevent the same from crushing under ordinary usage.
While the preferred method of constructing or forming the ornament has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of the operation of the method, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is l. An ornament embodying a body portion of a ribbon like strip of flexible material looped and folded into shape upon and about itself and covered with a sizing to render the same stiff and comparatively rigid.
2. An ornament embodying a body portion of a ribbon like strip of flexible material looped and folded upon itself to form a tied bow and having a coating of sizing to render the same stiff and comparatively rigid, and a coating of water proof material.
3. The method of constructing ornaments which consists in providing a ribbon like strip of flexible material, then immersing the same in Water to render it pliable, then While pliable looping and tying the material upon itself into a bow knot, then drying the shaped article, and applying a coating of sizing to the article to render the inaterial stiff and comparatively rigid.
4f. The method of constructing ornaments which consists in providing a ribbon like strip of flexible material, then iminersing the same in water to render it pliable, then while pliable looping and tying the material upon itself into a bow knot, then drying the shaped article, applying a coating of sizing to the article to render the material stiff and comparatively rigid, and then applying a Water proof material.
5. The method of constructing ornaments Which consists in providing a ribbon like strip of flexible material, then immersing the saine. in Water to render it pliable, then while pliable looping and tying the lmaterial upon itself into a bow knot, then drying the shaped article, then applying coloring to the ornan'ient, and then applying a coating of sizing to the article to render the material stiff and comparatively rigid.
G. The method of constructing ornaments which consists in providing a ribbon like Strip of flexible material, then immersing the same in Water to rende-r it pliable, then While pliable looping' and'tying the ymaterial upon itself into a bow knot, then drying the shaped article, then applying coloring to the ornament. then applying a coating of sizing to the article to render the'V material stiff and comparatively rigid, and then water proofing the ornament.
7. As a unitary article of manufacture a comparatively rigid article of ornamentation the body of which is formed of a strip of pliable fabric like material looped about and upon itself into shape and stiffened With a sizing solution and also having a water proof coating.
8. As a unitary article of manufacture a comparatively rigidarticle of ornainentation the body of which is formed of a ribbon like strip of fabric 'looped about and upon itself'to form a bow lor the like, and coated With a sizing to render the saine still and con'iparatively rigid.
9. As a unitary article of manufacture a comparatively rigid article of ornamentation the body of which is formed of a ribbon like strip of fabric looped about and upon itself to form a bow or the like, and
coated with a sizing to render the same stiff and conn'iaratively rigid, the article being coated witha Water proof material.
10. The method of constructing ornaments which `consists in providing a ribbon like strip of flexible material, then subjecting the same to the action of moisture to render it pliable, then while pliable looping and tying the material upon itself to forni a bow knot, and then applying acoating of sizing to the bow to render the material stiff and comparatively rigid.
In testimonyv whereof I have signed my name to this specification, onthis 8th day of July, A. D. 1925.
