Patented July 17, 1934 METHOD OF MANUFACTURING CELLOPHANE HATS Greta Coffey, Chicago, Ill., 'assignor to Nu-Dell Mfg. Co. Inc., a corporation of Illinois Application May 21, 1934, Serial No. 726,708
5 Claims.
My invention relates to a new and improved process of manufacturing hats or analogous articles. 5 My invention relates moreparticularly to an improved process for manufacturing hats or analogous articles from cellophane or similar material.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved process for manufacturing cellophane hats which consists of a few comparatively simple steps. I
- A further object of my invention is to provide an improved process of the type described by the use of which unskilled artisans may be able to construct cellophane hats so that the finished product will be attractive in appearance as well as durable and well made.
A further object of my invention is to provide a process for manufacturing cellophane hats whereby the completed hat will be constructed of a single element and whereby it can be shaped to the desired shape and held in this condition throughout the life of the hat.
Other objects and advantages will be more apparent from the following description wherein reference is had to the accompanying two sheets of drawings upon which Fig. l is a plan view of a circular sheet of cellophane.
Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the first step in the manufacture of a cellpohane hat therefrom, showing the same being placed upon a head or crown form,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating the next step, including the placing of a temporary retaining member over the crown,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the temporary retainer employed,
'Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the gummed 40 tapeemployed to provide a fixed crown fastening,
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of the decorative hat band placed over the fixed fastener member, Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view on an enlarged v scale showing} the fixed fastener member in place,
Fig. 8 is a similar sectional view showing the decorative hat band in place over the fixed fastener member, and i,
Fig. 9 is a side elevational view partially in perspective of a finished hat.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a sheet of cellophane 10 which may be of any desired shape or maybe circular as shown. The cellophane may be furnished in a variety of different colors as I have found that many of the present colors in which cellophane is made provide attractive appearing hats. a
The sheet of cellophane, which is comparatively thin and flexible, is then taken and placed over a hat or head form 12, such as the head form used in hat factories or in hat cleaning shops and similar places. The head form 12 may be mounted for rotation as shown upon a spindle 14 mounted in a block 16.
A retainer ring 18, most clearly. shown in Fig. 4, is then taken and placed over the sheet of cellophane and the head form 12 to form a crown 20 in the hat.. The retainer ring is formed with a pair of outwardly projecting loop members 22 which are adapted to be connectedtogether to securely hold the ring 18 in place as shown in Fig. 3.
After the sheet of cellophane has been fastened in place on the form 12 as shown in Fig. 3, the" projecting edges of the sheet are then pulled outwardly to remove irregular creases or bends at the crown. This enables the operator to form the brim in a more or less attractive wavy outline to give the semblance of the well-known picture ha After the hat brim has been formed as described, a strip of adhesive such as Scotch cellulose tape 24 is placed around the crown of the hat adjacent the retaining ring 18. The retaining ring 18 may then be removed and the strip 24 functions to hold the shape produced by placing the ring 18 upon the hat.
In order to cover up the cellulose strip 24 as well as to-provide a more attractive appearing article, a decorated strip of cellophane of either a contrasting color or a color similar to, the body of the hat is then placed about the crown, preferably covering the cellulose strip 24. In order tosecurely fasten the decorative strip or band 26 in place around the lower edge of the crown 20, liquid glue or similar adhesive may be applied with a brush upon the band 24.
The hat band 26 may then be tied as shown in Fig. 9 to form a decorative how 28. As soon as this has been done, the hat may be removed from the form and is readyto wear.
If desired, rectangular or odd shaped pieces of cellophane may be employed instead of the circular sheet which I have shown and described. It will also be understood that openings or'head decorative strips may be applied on the exterior of the hat as desired.
While I have illustrated and described one complete process of manufacturing hats of the type mentioned, it will of course be understood that modifications or changes may be made in the exact process described or in the specific steps taken and I do not wish to be limited in any particular; rather what I desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The process of -manufacturing cellophane hats consisting of the steps of placing a sheet of cellophane over a form, placing a temporary holding clamp over the same, arranging the brim in desired position, placing a gummed retainer in holding position around the lower edge of the crown of the hat, and placing a decorative hat band over the retainer member.
2. In the manufacture of cellophane hats, the steps of placing a circular v sheet of cellophane over a head form, placing a temporary circular clamp member over the head form, and drawingthe cellophane sheet downwardly to form a crown therein, placing a flexible fastener member about the lower edge of the crown, placing a decorative band over the fastener and gluing the same in place.
3. In the manufacture of cellophane hats, the steps of placing a circular sheet of cellophane over a head form, placing a temporary circular clamp member over the head form, drawing the cellophane sheet downwardly to form a crown therein, placing a flexible fastener member about the lower edge of the crown, and placing a decorative band over the fastener.
4. In the manufacture of cellophane hats, the steps of placing a sheet of cellophane over a head form, placing a temporary ring over the head form and pressing the cellophane downwardly to form a crown, placing a gummed binder around the lower edge of the crown, applying adhesive around the hat at the binder, and placing a decorative hat band upon the hat over the adhesive.
5. In the manufacture of cellophane hats, the steps of placing a sheet of cellophane over a form, placing a temporary retainer ring over the form, pressing the cellophane downwardly to form a crown, placing a binder around the lower edge of the crown, applying adhesive around the hat at the binder and placing a decorative hat band upon the hat over the adhesive and holding the same in place with the adhesive and by tying a decorative bow on the same.
